A bit of a shock..
No, nothing bad, just a reality check.

I added my $0.02 worth on the DPT forum last night, with regards to which editing software I use. I realised that I'd only been using photoshop for just over a year (although I used PSP for some time before)!

How long have the rest of you been using your software?

How long have I been using Photoshop? I started with Photoshop 5 that was already loaded on the second-hand computer my partner bought from a computer lecturer who repaired and sold reconditioned 486's so all in all about 4 years.

I did try a PSP 7 demo once, but once you'd had the best as they say

The first version I used was Photoshop 4, just as 5 was coming out, and everyone was raving about what a great upgrade it was I really knew how to use about 0.5% of the features then, but recently I think thats risen to maybe 2%, and with Steves book, its rising all the time!

I still have no idea what half the functions do. But then, if I've got this far, will I ever need to?

You all make me feel old, I started out learning Photoshop 2.5 and LivePicture in the early 90s. Back then I was a Creative Director in a small ad agency in New York. All real retouching was done by artists who used airbrushes, dyes and bleaches.

Then Quantel came out with their Paint Box and the trend to use digital retouchers started. But Photoshop was a toy then, memory and hard drives where small. You'd spend more time watching the curser spin, than working.

You think you feel old...

In 1987 I published a satirical magazine called The Truth, which was (as it happens) the first desktop-published newsstand magazine in the country. It won a few awards, and among the prizes was a video camera, digitising board (to get still images into the computer) and a program called ImageStudio. Very basic black and white montage stuff, a couple of years before Photoshop appeared. ImageStudio went on to become ColorStudio, which then turned into Painter.

I would be nostalgic about those days but, frankly, working without layers, channels or decent selection tools was a real pain even then. Photoshop 3 (the first to include layers) appeared at around the same time as my first child, and I remember having trouble deciding which event would change my life more...

Trinity, don't worry about the functions you aren't using. It's like owning a TV and worrying that you aren't watching all the programmes. Just take from it what you need!

Blimey, I'd forgotten about the Quantel! Something the size of a recording studio, which, now is probably as powerful as a fairly basic PC/Mac.

I remember when the Amiga first arrived on the scene, the first home system to have 4096 colours (except you could only use a fraction at any one time). My first 'graphic' work was on a Sinclair QL with a stunning 8 colours to play with (4 if you were using hi-res), suffice to say, I learned a lot about stippling

Ooh Amiga - I had an Amiga A1200, and prior to that an Amstrad CPC 464 which was the first time I came across BASIC and I used to draw very basic pixel sprites.

The Amiga was much better as it was my first introduction to a "proper" Graphics App. - Deluxe Paint III

I think the first art package I used was "Tony Heart's art master" or something like that, on the Commodore 64. It's hard drawing things with a joystick.
