HTCIP 2 - Thanks !
I just bought the 2nd edition book about two weeks ago, after previously using Photoshop WOW 7 and Martin Evenings Photoshop 7 for Photographers for the past year or so.....

I have to say that HTCIP has proved of far more use to me - a casual user of the program (but looking to get more serious- with photo manipulation and game/3d textures) -- especially the chapter on selections, and forcing me to pick up and start using the pen tool --- and explaining quick masks properly....... (too many books skirt around looking for a simple description of how to use these tools - ore assume people already know)

SO on that note congrats Steve - an excellent book - and worth every penny i spent on it. - My work has doubled in quality in my own eyes in the last two weeks alone.

Now I have one little question that I hope somone may be able to answer fairly simply...

>Q. When I select brushes or any tools, i normally get a graphical represntation of the tool - or a small circle showing me the size of the brush itself when i mouse over the image to be worked on.
Now occasionly - this will vanish , and in its (and every other tools) place is a small cross that wont adjust in size no matter how big the brush im using or what ever tool i use. It doesnt happen often - but even restarting PS wont fix it - although a reboot will...... ANyone know why this is happening, and have i simply inadvertently activated a view mode ?

Many thanks Steve and all

Danyuld

Hiya Danyuld

A quick answer to your question... press the Caps Lock key

I dont know anyone who has used Photoshop that has NOT encountered this problem, it drove me nuts for 3 weeks before I pressed every key on the keyboard out of pure frustration and discovered the solution!

Welcome to this merry bunch of photoshop addicts BTW

Thanks for your generous comments, Danyuld. Much appreciated! Martin Evening's book is also a great reference volume, and it will cover stuff like colour management that I really don't have the patience to go into. Martin's a good friend, and he's be pleased to hear you've enjoyed his book.

To answer your question, Tabitha's got it pretty much right - the Caps Lock key does show all painting tools as a crosshair. However, sometimes Photoshop will take it into its head to start showing crosshairs all by itself, even when the Caps Lock key isn't down. This is caused by a corruption of the Preferences file. You need to delete the Preferences (having first backed up any custom brushes, swatches etc) and relaunch Photoshop.

While you're here, take a look at the Friday Challenge - and submit some of your work for us!

Welcome to the forum

So many thanks to you both for the answer to that burning question, it has driven me crazy on occassion - not knowing why it was was changing the cursor...... thank you !!

Martins book was great, and went into incredible technical depth - information that will become more relevant as my work and knowledge progress.....

Photoshop WOW, was very handy for the effects cd included - for making quick layer styles etc - most of the rest of the excercises were loud, graphical alterations....

I will take a look at the friday chalenege for sure, and will be glad to submit some work here..... i look forward to the feedback....

thanks again..
