Freelancing and fees
Ive been asked by a few friends of friends who own their own business to possible work on designing logos images etc for their companies.

My question is this : whats the current average industry rate that a PS artist would charge at per hour / per job to give me an indication of where to pitch costs/prices?

I realise this depends on so many factors - experience size of project costs time etc etc......... just an idea would be very helpful .....

This is a really tricky one. It's something I get asked a lot, and there's no easy answer: there are just so many variables. Do they just want logos? Will they need letterheads, business cards and comp slips designed? Will they want a website? How many images? How big? How much needs to be done to each image?

In cases like this, it may be worth working to a fixed day rate, say between £200 and £400 a day depending on how good you are, how fast you are and how irritating they're going to be as clients. This last point is the real clincher: some people will say yes, fine, just what we wanted, others will mess you around forever.

The best thing might be to just do the job, and then negotiate fees afterwards. You'll have a much better idea by then of how long it's all taken you!

Not a lot of help, I know, but it's such a difficult thing to pin down.

In addition to Steve's excellent advice; it might be worthwhile getting something on paper from the client outlining exactly what they want. That way, they can't try and get more than their money's worth from you, if they want something in addition to the spec, you can charge them extra!

I have also used this approach. Ask them what their budget is, how much do they want to spend - if you think it's fair then great, money in the bank, if not then at least you know how to tailor your bid for negotiation. Other factors to consider, how often are they going to use the image/ part image, what's their marketing strategy - local, worldwide ? and of course, do you want their custom in the future?

Many thanks for the information and help guys - much appreciated and i`ll be sure to consider all the advice given....

I settled for a job fee on this one- and it also gives me a client portfolio item for free, so i win both ways

Absolutely. The most important thing, at this stage, is to get as much portfolio work done as possible. Not just for the portfolio itself, but for the experience of working with clients, meeting briefs, and so on.
