Clipping adjustment layers by default
Have started using Photoshop CC18. With all my past editions of PS I have always set adjustment layers to clip by default to the image layer below. I cannot remember how I did this last time in CS 6 where I have it enabled. I have checked everything I can think of (preferences, layer options, layer adjustment palette options) till I'm going crazy. At present every time I create an adjustment layer I have to clip by hand which is severely irritating. Found it! 
You have to first open the Adjustments Panel (which many people don't use I think) then open it's drop down menu. At the bottom you can choose whether adjustment layers clip automatically to the layer below and whether they automatically carry an attached mask layer. Duh! My view is that having the Adjustment layer clipping to the underlying layer automatically would be just as annoying as not having it clipping. You very often need a global change and everyone will have a personal preference on this one. Horses for courses and all that. Having created the Adj Layer you can either right click on it and choose 'create clipping mask', or unclip it from the drop down menu. This only takes a second and I cannot really see this being an inconvenience. You can also Alt click on the bottom line to clip and unclip the Adjustment Layer as desired. Again, this takes no time at all. In CS6, you could hold Alt click on the Adjustment layer icon when opening and a dialogue box would appear giving you the option to clip the Adsjustment and also choose the blending mode etc. I used this regularly and this loss following introduction of the Cloud version is the most frustrating aspect to me. Not sure why Adobe took this backward step. |

It all comes down to your personal manner of working. I use very, very few global adjustments indeed. They are a rare exception. Virtually all my adjustment layers are clipped. So, for me, clipping by default makes perfect sense.
