The Swamp
With a little bit of photoshop, this miniature swamp I built becomes...

This full size swamp...

Re: The Swamp
I see you've used green screen matting, Atom. I would really like to expore this technique with my video camera, where did you get the Chroma-key Green Screen Paper as I know it's quite expensive, or have you improvised?

The image is stunning it would make a great Horror movie set "The Cheat from the Black Lagoon.

Re: The Swamp
Yeah, green screens are very handy. I do all sorts of video editing, and in fact, this was done to show my friend an example of how we could use this miniature as a a set, and green screen ourselves in. We could then add ripples in after effects, and add mist and water splashes from either stock footage, or an excellent particle program called Particle Illusion 3. For anything small I use neon green poster board, which is extremely cheap at the local walgreens here (79 cents)
, but I have no clue what it would cost in Britain. For larger effects I use a nice 6 x 9 green screen I got for around $60 on ebay.
Video editing can be just about as fun as photoshopping, but it is much harder since you are working with thousands of frames, instead of one.

If you are interested in movie making www.fxhome.com has some good tips on their forums, and their programs are decent, although I don't use them very often (excellent for starting out).

Right now I'm learning to use 3D with Zbrush (www.pixologic.com)
and animate with Messiah Studio (http://www.projectmessiah.com).

Re: The Swamp
I love your swamp, Atomic

You totally inspired me to have a go with something similar... but that means buying (and learning) a whole new bunch of programs and equipment, and there just arent enough hours in the day (nor pounds in my bank account !)

Re: The Swamp
I don't understand the relevance of the "green screen matting" What does it do and why is it important to start off with a green screen area?

Re: The Swamp
There are two type of video matte which are Green Screen or Blue Screen, Eventer.

They are used as backdrops when you want to superimpose one image over the top of another like Superman flying over a city landscape. The colour (green or blue) is used by video editing programs to determining what will be transparent and what will be solid, the paper/cloth backdrops are quite expensive because they have to be balanced to a determined 'chroma key' of blue or green for it to work well.

http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/basic_chromakey_fcp_3.html

It's quite a complicated business to get perfect but once mastered the number of video effects you can do is limitless.

Re: The Swamp
What you do with green screen is color "key". It makes it to the selected color, or range of colors is removed the picture, thereby "cutting" out whatever is not neon blue or green so that you have what you want on a transparent layer. In non-movie programs you don't "key" you can replace color, use the wand...etc

Green screen just helps a bit when it comes to Photoshop. When it comes to creating movies it is essential... If you don't have a green screen you have to mask every frame manually to get a transparent layer. With thousands to millions of frames in a video you can see why that would pose a "challenege". Green screens are extremely popular in movies and T.V, and even (obviously) the weather channel uses them to cut out the guy so they can put the fake digital weather map behind him.

Anyhow, if you find movie making interesting this www.fxhome.com is an excellent place to learn. This post has a really nice amount of information they compiled together into one post for you...
http://fxhome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14822&sid=

I see even Steve has or did have an interest in making videos, since if you look at his website (www.stevecaplin.com) you see that he had some fun with after effects
(Steve you need to put a link to this site on there, because when I visit a computer I haven't used before I have to type in www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com and then get through the splash page and stuff.)

Anyhow, if you do decide to learn this stuff, photoshopping is a very nice skill to have, since you make movie backdrops, foreground objects, and make textures for 3D models.
Adobe After effects is very similar to Adobe Photoshop, though it still takes some learning.
