Have I managed to be tasteless enough?
Ingrid and I got married in Richmond registry office. I was a widower and had been a single dad for three years with two boys by then aged seven and ten. She was an Austrian who had come into our lives a couple of years previously.

The ceremony, performed by a dowdy but very friendly and chatty lady registrar, took place in a hideously shabby and dull room furnished with nothing but some metal chairs and a single table, that had clearly seen better days. However the worst and tackiest part of this was an even shabbier faded, rather less than clean, small green faux velvet heart cushion with a lace edging, sitting lonely and forlorn in the centre of the otherwise empty table waiting to receive the ring in readiness for later placing on the bride’s finger.

When the ceremony started all trace of the registrar's chatty voice and friendly manner vanished instantly - to be replaced by her 'serious' ceremonial and formal deportment. Her body stiffened and her voice dropped a full octave and, instead of speaking, began to intone. A female Jekyll & Hyde staged by Monty Python!

The effect was so completely bizarre, and so utterly unexpected that my best man got the giggles. This, to the registrar's evident displeasure, set off our two young boys into suppressed spluttering which in turn caused me great trouble trying to keep a straight face through the ceremony as well. Ingrid, on the other hand, who's english was not as good then as it is now, was a complete bag of nerves desperately worried about being able to repeat the marriage lines word perfect after the registrar. Just to add a bit of extra colour to this already surreal occasion, so many of Ingrid's fashionista friends came dressed in black that my mother was heard to remark 'sotto voce' in the background that she wasn’t sure if she’d come to a wedding or a funeral!

Thus was the most special day of our lives .........

Yesterday was our anniversary, so I set out to try and make a completely kitsch and un-stylish card to reflect the drab tastelessness of this tawdrily splendid day which launched me into a marriage that twenty six years on is still as strong, rewarding and loving as it ever was.

Of such unglamorous moments are a lifetime’s memories made!!

Its lovely both visually and because of the story behind it - and your ring looks a lot classier than mine which I had made (inexpertly) out of our hair. When I put it in front of the registrar she visibly recoiled probably thinking it was a baby tarantula
