Thanks Neil and Gordon.
I had two actual photos of candle flames on my palette monitor for reference.
The process was much like painting from life.

Here is a slideshow, of screenshots, showing the basic steps, not necessarily in the same order that I did them.
It also reduces the original 38 layers to 12 images for display purposes.
This is not a detailed tutorial but you get the idea.

Soft Brush.
One gradient.
Filters: Clouds, sponge, gaussian blur, liquify.
Pen tool, smudge and blur tool.
Layer masks.
Blend modes.

(Sorry to go next again) Hi Tom I just wanted to say that is one of the best 100% Photoshop images I've ever seen (including Colin Smith & Bert Monroy) I loved the quick slide show but could we get a full tutorial? I'm sure everybody including the the site author...oh what's his name? Anyway - I'm sure everyone would really enjoy it.

Use www.imageshack.us to upload your images then you are not restricted so much by size. Plus it saves Steve's bandwidth.

But please, be careful not to throw too much wooden shavings above Paris !

Well, after a bit of thought, I decided to get you a private plane for your trips to Paris. I've had it fitted out with a top of the range computer and monitor so you don't have to stop Photoshopping while you're travelling. Happy Birthday!
