Challenge 707: The brick iron
I was sent this picture by DavidMac, who suggested members might want to build other household items out of brick. Well, perhaps you might, but your challenge this week is to turn this sculpture back into a functioning iron, ideally by creating the required textures from scratch. If you wish, you might want to fix that broken lead, too. NOTE: Next Friday morning I'll be en route to New Orleans for the Creative Pro conference, so may be somewhat late is writing up this Challenge. High res is here. |

Since creating textures from scratch is my most difficult task, I've (at least for now) decided on just quick and silly... |

I think we can concede you both of those. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
Well it's been a long quiet Sunday so I managed to devote a whole day to this - which is just as well as I needed it! I have treated this quite literally as a technical challenge which is good discipline for me because I don't normally like them ........... when I suggested this picture to Steve I had something quite different in mind which he promptly turned on its head! I photographed this in Beijing. It's interesting how once it's converted to a real object it takes on a definite 1970s early communist Chinese chunky style. Heavy economy on cable too! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thank you Sara. David that's very nicely done and, unlike mine, on brief. For the next couple of weeks I'll be on my hols so little, if any, participation. _________________ If at first you don't succeed then skydiving is not for you. |

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
I was going to leave it broken with coloured wires sticking out - but it looked rather silly, so I didn't pursue it ......... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Oops! I think I wrote chrome because my iron is chrome, mine may be plastic but looks like chrome... |

Brick? Iron? Steam? Steampunk! My plan was to not make an animation this week but the above literally screamed for FX... it is here |

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
OH! Even without animation this is just fabulous! The iron's clunky shape, especially at the back, does cry out for something like this. Beautifully done. Love the caged light and all the tiny details like the screws in the sole plate. The wonderful thing about steam punk is that one can completely over indulge in the entirely unnecessary. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A little bit off topic ........ not an entry
This is a wee bit off topic but, after posting my previous reply, I went to make a cup of coffee and was suddenly struck by the similarity between my coffee machine and Loyd's image. All it needs is re-colouring in brass, copper and wood. Seems that modern 21st century steam punk is alive and well ............ _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
David - Thanks! Steampunk is fun and offers a lot of freedom to play with. As is always the case, I see a couple of things that are in the animation that I now wish I had done in the original... oh well. btw- Your coffee maker looks way to complicated for me... Michael - Thank you! I appreciate your comment. "IRON MAN", but of course... awesome! |
