Re: Challenge 726: The fortune teller
A year so ago I was in my local silversmith trying to buy a present. Their computer system was down for some reason they couldn’t understand. I had a quick look at it and told them that Microsoft was doing an automatic update and the system would remain down for as long as it took.

I suggested that they disable the automatic update asap. It took a lot of their working day to get the system back.

Condolences lwc, microsoft and their updates are a nightmare not least because every time things go wrong I can hear the sniggers of a thousand mac users in my mind

Thanks Josephine... let 'em "snigger", they have their own issues to deal with.

It appears that Microsoft's latest update was mainly for syncing smart phones and PC data... that's something I don't need. I still refuse to update from my ten-year old flip-phone, it does everything that I require from a 'telephone'!

My first ever (and possibly last ever) animated GIF
It seems it is your birthday Steve ....... so happy birthday.

Never tried a GIF before. Had to learn from scratch. Lot of work for such a silly end result!

A silly end result often makes it all worthwhile... I think it's great!

Be careful though, make a coule more animated gifs and you could get hooked!

I'm curious: Does your browser allow some of the frames to run at 0/100 sec., or does it default to 10/100? If you're on a Mac, do you use Safari?

Re: Challenge 726: The fortune teller
It's somewhat of a trivia question.

I guess my question should have been: Does your animation run at the speed you thought it would after being posted?

Gifs are browser dependent. Different browsers can run gifs at different speeds depending on the original gif frame speed settings.

I checked your gif and of the 24 frames all but two were timed at 0/100 sec. The "face up" at 300/100 and the "face down" timed at 300/100 sec. Internet Explorer and Safari both support down to 6/100 per sec., any frames set slower than that are rounded up to 10/100 sec., which is the case with your gif. Which could make the animation appear to run slower than intended.

Chrome, Firefox and Opera will support down to 2/100 sec., but anything slower will default to 10/100 sec.

Re: Challenge 726: The fortune teller
I did this empirically by trial and error without knowing anything about it. It was done completely in photoshop CS6 X as a frame animation. The frames are set by default to 0.03 secs each - I left them at that. The two static head positions I set to 3 seconds each. How this is interpreted in the final GIF I don't know. I had no idea it might play differently in different browsers. Since I tested in Safari locally before uploading it played in Safari on line as I expected.

Just checked in Chrome. Plays same speed.

Re: Challenge 726: The fortune teller
It defaulted to 10/100 in Chrome too... interesting, perhaps Chrome has made some changes to their browser or... since my dedicated gif editor shows your frame speeds to be at 0/100, that may be what Chrome is seeing and could explain the default to 10/100.

Nothing wrong with defaulting to 10/100 as long as that's what you expected. I make a few gifs at 10 fps (usually to keep file sizes to a minimum), but most of them are at 15 fps (6/100) or some combination of speeds to get a specific effect.
