Challenge 739: Building on sand
There's a largely deserted beach near Telde, on the east coast of Gran Canaria - or at least it was when I visited. Palm trees, a dazzling blue sky, and a hideous concrete monstrosity that spoils the view.

Can you smarten it up? Or replace it with something more in keeping with the surroundings?

Normally I'd straighten up a view like this, but since DavidMac always complains about the perspective when I do I've decided to leave it as photographed. Which means any buildings you add will have to match this distorted view. I'm sure David will appreciate your thanks for this extra complication.

High res is here.

Thank you Josephine.

I had to research Wes Anderson, as I did not recognize the name. I found that the only film of his I have seen was the very entertaining The Royal Tenenbaums. Unfortunately I don't understand the reference made with your SEA VIEW entry. Should I assume that it relates to one of his other movies?

Not as such - its more a question of capturing a certain style - he is very big on symmetry (not possible from the angle shown so I went for the classic one third composition) a vivid warm and often retro colour palette and the use of large signage to indicate place.
If you get a chance watch The Grand Hotel Budapest or Moonrise Kingdom

Last one! This from Moonrise Kingdom. If you like the style and are on instagram there is an account called Accidentally Wes Anderson that is worth a follow http://www.instagram.com/accidentallywesanderson/?hl=en

Actually looking at these I have just realised that I should have desaturated the sky and made it more turquoise so entry no 2!

Thanks Josephine... very interesting, I'll have to check it out.

Didn't your Mum ever warn you about red rags and bulls Steve?

I was tempted to straighten this up just to be contrary but, as wished, I have used the true perspective.

In the end it's a lot of work to little effect. Using Steve's excellent 3D Photoshop book to help, I imported the cars as 3D layers and did the necessary to position, get shadows and lighting to match etc. It has done nothing to change my opinion that Photoshop 3D is an ill conceived, awkward, clunky "bolt on" of limited use, hideously and un-intuitively implemented, and with renders so slow as to be risible (or by the time you've got that far) infuriating. Even with Steve's well described help and instructions if found myself screaming with frustration at my monitor.

I both love and hate Wes' movies.

"Moonrise Kingdom" was a hate. I felt what should have been a delicate 'coming of age' movie was trampled on by style.

But with "Hotel Budapest", which is a kind of fairy tale, all the magic came alive.

Best yet was "Isle of Dogs". His 'proscenium' style photography is perfect for animation. It managed to be charming, engaging, and, for Wes, fiercely political at the same time.

But the way we all see things differently is what makes them so fascinating.

The latest in production (actually shooting now), is black and white. Now that could be interesting ........

Lovely. One of your best. (Even if it is inhabited by giants )

Same idea as Gordon , only a little earlier along in the destruction.
