Challenge 747: Captain Lee
I had been planning something humorous about the Boeing 747 for the 747th Challenge, but given the fact that two of their planes have fallen out of the sky in the last six months I decided this wasn't a suitable topic at this point in time.

Instead, here's another image from my visit to Tate Britain: a painting from 1594 by Marcus Gheeraerts of the Elizabethan soldier Captain Thomas Lee.

According to the blurb, this is "an imagined combination of Irish soldier and ancient Roman hero", but to me it just looks as if he's come out half dressed.

Can you give the poor man some trousers?

High res is here.

Is it my imagination or has someone puppet warped his left forearm? Either way it's a very disturbing bit of anatomy.

The more I look at this the weirder it is. What's that ring on his back? Maybe he's still learning to swim and that's where he's going in this odd attire.

I think the ring is a shield. After all, he is a soldier.

No, it's a large bowl - he's going to wash his feet.

Oh, so that's why he's not wearing any pants. (Trousers for you in the UK, although it could be UK pants too from the angle.)

Re: Challenge 747: Captain Lee
Captain Lee's encounter with the lumberjacks had not been without incident.

Yes, I know the legs aren't right but given his other anatomical peculiarities ...

Also the way his sword is disappearing behind the tree is straight out of Escher's playbook

Pure Joesphine!!

As for all the other stuff you mention, I don't think Marcus was one of the 16th century's great talents.

As for the mystery "ring", all I could see was a "quickie" sombrero... I'll slink away now.
