Challenge 761: On Ilkley Moor
I'm indebted to Ant Snell for this week's starting image, a couple of immaculately carved graffiti rocks that he found in Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire.

There's clearly a military theme here: one was carved by someone in the 24th Foot Regiment in 1884, the other by a friend of someone in the British Expeditionary Force in 1940.

I'd like you to show either work being created - you can choose which.

High res images are here and here.

Memorials to fallen comrades who loved their Dales?

Re: Challenge 761: On Ilkley Moor
For some reason Ant you've really stumped me on this one. I am not a happy bunny. This was supposed to be tongue in cheek and it's ended up looking like a really tasteless ad for an undertaker!

Excuse this very wordy intro but for non Brits I think a bit of explanation will be needed.

"On Ilkla Moor baht 'at" is a song in Yorkshire dialect. It means on Ilkley Moor without a hat: "bar the hat" - which in dialect becomes condensed to "baht 'at". This results in death from the cold by exposure. "Tha's bahn t'catch thi deeath o'cowd" leading to rest of the grisly story.

We used to sing it as children. It's gruesomeness appealed to us kids.

It starts like this:

Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee,
On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?!
Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee?
Wheear 'as ta bin sin ah saw thee?
On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?!
On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?!
On Ilkla Moor baht 'at?!

Subsequent verses are exactly the same with just the narrative line changed in each.

Tha's been a cooartin' Mary Jane

Tha's bahn t'catch thi deeath o'cowd

Then we shall ha' to bury thee

Then t'worms 'll cum and eat thee oop

Then ducks 'll cum and eat oop t'worms

Then we shall go an' ate oop ducks

Then we shall all 'ave etten thee

That's wheer we get us oahn back

There is tradition of male voice pit choirs (coalminers) in Yorkshire which led to my putting two and two together and getting minus four.

In 1879 the 24th foot were sent to Zululand where they suffered two severe defeats at the hands of the Zulus: the first at Isandlwana and the second at Rorke's Drift.

The second of these was the subject of the 1964 movie "ZULU". The film which incidentally introduced us to a then unknown actor by the name of Michael Caine.

The E. M. Lancaster date of 1882 on this stone is interesting as the 24th Foot ceased to exist and became the South Wales Borderers on 1 July 1881.

Put these together with the true meaning of "baht 'at" and you may now consider yourselves ready for the next pub quiz!

One of Britain's best known alien sightings was the Ilkley Moor Alien.

Hi All,
Good to see you having a go at my challenge this week. DAVID, good back ground spoken like a true yorkshire man. Unfortunately (well fortunately actually) I'll not be participating as I am away in Kefalonia until late Thursday.

Loyd. So wrapped up in my own frustrations that I forgot to say that this is a perfectly convincing piece of work.
