If we push hard enough maybe we can insist on an animated shadow complete with spinning rotors. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David, if I were any good at animation then that is exactly what I would be trying for. How about it Loyd? |

All six birds (hawks) are there (now)... two of them mostly obscured by the chopper cockpit... no more circles only! The shadow is at no extra charge... this time. |

There's never going to be shadows or a tail rotor in this one... don't ask! |

Rusty and David go a shootin'
As requested (well sort of vaguely'ish) by Mariner This little caricature is getting a bit off topic as it doesn't use the image or people - although it is a Robinson 22. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 764: Up, up and away
Thanks Michael and David. I should have done it in the first place, but my inherent laziness set in. I'm not that happy with the shadow as it really needs to move separately and apart from the helicopter. However my skill level and reluctant software would require that it be done frame by frame. I just can't make it work smoothly that way so I've quit trying to perform that task. As always, I'm open for any suggestions to help solve the 'parallax' shadow issue. ________________________________________________________ David... scary stuff there. I can't imagine riding in one of those things and needing a harness to keep me from falling out... yikes! Years ago a friend owned a flying field and pilot school in Ft. Worth, TX. He taught multi-engine, instrument, aerobatics and helicopter. He always said that teaching a new helicopter pilot to perform an autorotation maneuver was the most harrowing part of the job, he could certainly tell some frightening stories. |

Re: Challenge 764: Up, up and away
Loyd your work is both technically impressive and entertaining. This is a fun challenge that we all enjoy - but there's a limit to how much time we can set aside in a week however much we enjoy it. When I look at the animations you do and how fast you produce them I am almost always impressed. I always see stuff that you could have animated but didn't - but that, of course, is the ultimate bottomless pit. This time Mariner and I have had a little fun and, as I was sure you would, you came up trumps. (I think modern English needs a replacement for that particular phrase.)
I remember a director I once worked with being very scared because when we arrived to set up for some aerial filming the helicopter pilot who arrived to fly us was a grey haired man quite evidently close to his sixties, if not already there. He said "Man, I don't want to fly with him he's old!. I said that's the best kind there is - they're still alive to fly you! Helicopters are both wonderful and scary. Autorotation is a great theory - and indeed a verifiable fact. But like "gliding" a huge passenger jet without power, it's possible, it's been done, but somehow it's not very high on the scale of probability of success. Like any cameraman I have spent a lot of time filming from airborne platforms - from jet planes to single engine prop planes and massive twin rotor helicopters to the tiny Robinson. None of them feel right or natural. I have been in a couple of truly hair raising near misses in helicopters - including a military chopper that fell to ground, mercifully a few moments after take off, due to a tail rotor failure. I was strapped face down on one of the external stretcher carriers so I could film directly downwards. I could do nothing except helplessly watch the ground rush up towards me. I ended with my face literally inches from the tarmac. Truly one of the scariest moments of my life! It was a recruiting film for the RAF. The pilot was sent to hospital but I was OK except for a very close wet and brown trouser call. The officer in charge came over and, with impressive concern for my welfare, said "Is your camera OK?". When I said yes it hadn't been damaged he said "Good! There's another chopper on it's way. We'll soon have you airborne again.". In that amazingly stupid way we males of the species function I was more frightened of admitting that I was scared to death in front of all the RAF crew than I was of going up again. So up I went! The best and most stable aerial platform I have ever filmed from is a hot air balloon. It's wonderful and, except for the occasional "burn" completely silent. You hear every little sound from the ground - breathtaking. Mind you even that is not so idyllic when it lands - especially if it's windy. Apologies to Steve, and all those to whom this must be less than fascinating, for co-opting a challenge thread. I do blather on sometimes. Nice graphics David. Blather on if you want, that's what a forum is for. Some people don't blather enough. |

Re: Challenge 764: Up, up and away
As we seem to be on the subject of helicopter stories ... Back in 1989 I spent some time with the Swiss Air Force for some air to air photography. I was being flown from Interlaken, over the mountains, to Sion in an Allouette helicopter and sitting next to the pilot. The Allouette has a lot of glazing and gives a wonderful all round view. As we climbed up the face of one particular mountain at around 8000 feet we came upon a level patch of scree and quickly found ourselves scooting across this scree field roughly 50 feet above it and doing around 95 knots. We soon came to the edge of the scree and shot over the edge of a 6000 feet drop. The word ‘exhilarating ‘ fails to adequately describe the feeling. Little did I know that 30 years later my own government would be metaphorically letting me do it all over again but this time without the benefit of a set of rotor blades or wings or knowing where the parachute was stowed ... or even if we had one. _________________ Time flies like an arrow but fruit flies like a banana. |

From what can remember the Allouette's glazing curved in right down almost to one's feet, giving an exceptional downward view. It must have looked and felt absolutely astounding!! Things like that really hit the emotions and stay with us. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Gordon the shadow moving to meet the helicopter on landing is just perfect. The tilt forward on take off and the beautiful little change of direction to vertical just before touch down are all the work of a man who knows! Chapeau. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
