Challenge 767: The houseboat
On DavidMac's travels to Antwerp he had no sooner left Plantin's workshop than he came across this extraordinary boat sticking out of a house. As David explains:

The House of the Five Continents ("Huis de Vijf Werelddelen")

Belgium was the birthplace of the Art Nouveau movement and offers many truly splendid buildings in this style... but this is truly one of the most bizarre.

It is actually a complex of four houses designed for the well-heeled shipbuilder P. Roeis, hence the ship forms and name, which also references Antwerp's longstanding stature as a global port. It was built to designs of Frans Smet-Vehas in 1901.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it: put the boat to sea.

High res is here.

NOTE: I'm away on holiday/on vacation/closed for maintenance for two weeks from today. The next two Challenges will be posted for me by David Asch, who takes care of things here when I'm not around. I'll write up both this and the next Challenge on my return.

Max and the grands kids leave on Monday so I hope I get a proper go at this after they have gone.

I think I feel something manga'ish or steam punk'ish coming on .......

Dave, it's just been announced that I am going to be a Granddad come Feb, Is that what I have to look forward to? Even less time for Photoshop?
Kidding, I can’t wait really

These are ten and fourteen. They need to be kept occupied and out of mischief.

Loyd I love how you made the water (sea) move, and the boat on the left-hand side sway with that water...BUT somethin ain't right...

Mine are never completely right... lol Sadly the ship is aground on a coral reef. Tell me what else you see. There is an issue with the seagull's position as his 'lower' wing flap is blocked from view by the ship.. I noticed that but wasn't motivated to fix it.

This is quite a tricky one David. It's the violent clash between the newish bows and the steampunk background which I am trying to fix.

The minute I saw this bizarre house it screamed challenge at me. There are so many ingenious lateral thinkers here .......

Loyd. sorry. I was trying to be smart, and thought you would figure it out. So here is what I actually meant: the ship on the right side should be gently rocking with the sea/waves even though it's anchored; instead, there's no movement at all! You have two weeks to correct this before the site owner punctiliously points this out to you.

Gordon there was a time when we were just praising Anna for this kind of work, but now we have Loyd, frank, Sara as well; anyway, beautiful work Gordon, and how did you do that lightning?

Thank you Michael.

The lightning comes courtesy of a rather ancient Photoshop plug in called Eye Candy 7 by Alien Skin. This is my go to plug in for lightning as it produces excellent results.

Check your pms.

Okay, thanks Michael.

I can be a bit thick sometimes. I have to use a different software program to add a moving object (in this case the seagull) from behind a foreground object. At that point I can no longer drift the foreground object (the boat). In my minds-eye the boat was solidly aground.

Anyway, here is a modified version to 'drift the ship'. I had to use different seagulls, but I did give you a stingray in the water and a parrot on the boat. I think that I like this one better... I also had to take it from 75 frames up to 90 to help smooth the loop transition.

Re: Challenge 767: The houseboat
While I'm here I might as well post this one... the houseboat although sinking is in fact drifting...

Oh Yes! Of course! But shouldn't it be an old codger on top of the assurance building. One of our self portraits should do ........

BTW I just started researching mine last night as I can start later today. Now I discover that I downloaded the very same mermaid figure head as your previous image. Back to the drawing board ..... slate ...... tablet ...... whatever ......

Oooh .... Ooooops I didn't read the posts properly. My mermaid remarks should have been addressed to Gordon ........ 'pologies to all .......

Put it down to grandkids stress ......

Actually that's unfair and untrue - they're lovely. Very time consuming ...... but fun!
