Challenge 776: King Arthur
Interesting that Mariner should have chosen a King Arthur theme in his entry to last week's Challenge, because that's the theme of this week as well.

Here's the setting for an Arthurian show at Puy du Fou, a spectacular display which tells the story of the 5th century monarch who became king through the dubious electoral process of pulling a sword out of a stone, egged on by the sorcerer Merlin.

You just about make out the sword embedded in the top of the stone on the left. Can you complete the scene?

High res is here.

Now, anybody, did they steal our legend, or did we steal theirs?

And there I was thinking that Tudor style houses were unique to England.

They probably are. All those houses are fake. As is the lake.

I've got a pretty busy week ahead so I wanted to get my challenge in early.

I am so thankful I have a friend such as Tony. I sent him the brief late last night and this morning before 8:00 AM he sent me back some great material.

Re: Challenge 776: King Arthur
First to pull the sword from the stone was Ben Mills, with a neatly placed King Arthur and a menacing-looking black knight - and, of course, the obligatory Monty Python French knight on the battlements. I like the dark, brooding tone you’ve brought to this image; add a slight shadow to the black knight and you’re done.

For the still image, tooquilos has brought the portcullis down - and replaced the sword with a bigger one to move it into the foreground. Oh, and a new sky and water too. A great 3D start to the animated version, with a neat bouncing walking effect, and I like the dancing, sparking sword - it really is the star of the show. A splendid spinning round table, set with a shield design - splendid.

A somewhat ecclesiastical setting from DavidMac, with a novice priest reading incantations while a shadowy figure links on the battlements. I like the woman leading the horse, although you need to look at the relative sizes and positions: with her shoulder on a level with the horse’s head, her feet are much too far in front of the horse’s legs. Great lighting, though. I greatly enjoyed the story in the political version.

High drama from Ant Snell, with Arthur wrestling with his sword while a knight on horseback races past - is he late for a joust? I like the man jumping out of the window in the background, very Chaucerian. The mist is a nice touch, too, if a little blobby in places.

A ghostly image from lwc, with a craggy Merlin showing a very rugged-looking King Arthur. I like the video effects inside the frame, and the background treatment.

A medieval Arthur from Eva Roth, with a curious sideways pulling action. I like the new sky, and the overall painterly effect - well done for resisting the Oil Paint filter. Not sure about his shadow though; I think it needs to lie along the ground more.

Wow, Frank is really firing on all cylinders these days. Some glorious special effects here - not least the pulsating body as Arthur struggles to get the sword out of the stone. And Merlin’s box of theatrical tricks is hugely impressive. Fabulous, Frank.

A somewhat enlarged Arthur from Sara Rawland - at least I assume it’s Arthur in that still image. Oh, no, I see from the animated version it’s Merlin, guiding a very young Arthur. Excellent jaw movements timed with his speech, and I like Arthur’s bodily struggles. A fun ending, and some terrific sound effects.

Just out of interest, here’s the moment in the show when Arthur pulls the sword. Out of the hole gushes a stream of water, which then turns into flame:

At the end of the show, a circular area in the centre of the lake sinks, water gushing into the hole, and a round table complete with knights rises out of it. Then knight rides a horse out of the hole and into the audience. I have no idea how they accomplished this.

Interesting comment Steve. I agree she does look awkward, but the horse and woman are extracted together from a single photograph. The relationship between horse and woman is real ...... exactly as photographed. There definitely is an anomaly but I am not quite sure what. I think the deception lies in a difference in lens height. She and the horse are photographed from a little more above which separates them. The horse's forelegs being hidden behind the foreground wall seems to exaggerate the separation too. It troubled me at the time but I let it pass.

Thanks Steve.

Thanks very much Steve.
During my research I looked at pictures from that show and it looks like a truly amazing show they put on. Perhaps Merlin helps with the sinking area
