Challenge 792: The amphitheatre
One of the star attractions of the French theme park Puy du Fou is the full-scale Roman amphitheatre, complete with chariot races and wild animals.

Here it is as the audience is taking its seats. Sorry about the steel rope in the middle of the frame, I couldn't avoid it.

Can you start the show?

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 792: The amphitheatre - warm up time
Entirely in keeping with Puy de Fou's reputation for authenticity and historical accuracy ...........

Coo is it really time for a new Friday Challenge already? Still in India, currently in Ranthambore National Park trying and failing to photograph tigers.

Michael- at long last a Challenge requiring your Roman Centurions

You could put a couple in the ring here.

Have a wonderful time.

Not a lot to offer this week. This is really bad Photoshop ...... but made with a definite nostalgia.

Re: Challenge 792: The amphitheatre
Some gates! I calculated them to the top of the arch to be over 10 metres high.

Re: Challenge 792: The amphitheatre
I heard the word "Amphitheatre" mentioned...yeah, yeah, but it's somfink for the pot: another two-framer.

It appears the Gladiator's "hip-hop" rendition has met with demonstrable disapproval!

I think that is the best work you have done recently, Michael.

Very nice two framer Michael
Anna, that's one mean sounding dinosaur, also like how people move in the audience, nice work again
Ant, I'd be hiding behind a shield as well, Lions having a nice light snack?
Another one I thought I wouldn't tackle: but here goes:

Re: Challenge 792: The amphitheatre
Nice work Frank and Anna, and thanks for all the positive comments folks.

It looks as though this gladiator/centurion rendition of "hip-hop" has met with some approbation from Caesar himself.

Re: Challenge 792: The amphitheatre
First to entertain the bloodthirsty crowds this week was DavidMac, with an ingenious way of concealing that errant pole. Took me a while to work out what was going on in this image - that’s quite a pose. I don’t think I could do that any more. I like the helmet. And a fitting tribute to the real Spartacus in the second entry.

A different amphitheatre, maybe, but a splendid piece from michael sinclair - surprising how well a two-framer can work. I like the subtle shift in body position of the gladiator. Watch out for glaring background jumps, thought, such as behind his shield and the back of his helmet. And don’t you think the crowd’s movement would be more convincing if the arms rotated, rather than sliding up and down?

I enjoyed the second entry, but the contrast on your jiving gladiator seems rather low compared to the rest of the image. Good body movement.

A funny entry from Ben Mills, the jar of Oxo sitting neatly on that plinth. Well, fairly neatly; the perspective of the jar is somewhat too strong for its distance from us. Good job removing that rope, by the way.

A fine selection of entertainments from Ant Snell, and particularly fine rope-removal. The nearby lions look perfect; the one in the background is rather too desaturated - and why is the man he’s fighting wearing a suit?

Now you don’t expect to see a T Rex in a Roman amphitheatre. But in tooquilos's entry it fits rather well between the palm trees. Why are your lights drifting down to the right, though? Interesting sliding movement in the animated version: couldn’t you get the legs to work? Not using Poser any more? But the people walking around in the crowd work perfectly.

Brilliant work from Frank, with a lot of the action happening off in the distance. The flames work really well, as does the centurion with magic lightning power. The foreground horse, the horses in the background, the balloons - this really builds to a great conclusion! Great choice of sound, too, and a nicely deleted rope.

So Josephine Harvatt looked at he amphitheatre and thought never mind about the rope, what this scene needs is a bridal dinosaur with a wedding cake. But yes, that plinth does rather resemble a tiered cake, and that’s a very neat conversion job. A little confused by the triangular shadow, though.

A haunting image from Mariner, with a child sacrifice about to take place in the now pagan amphitheatre. The removal of all the people from the seats is extraordinary, and immaculately achieved. The most interesting part for me, though, is how removing the base from the fire bowl moves it right back in the scene. Splendid.

And just for the sake of interest, here's the real thing.

Quick off the blocks but not much to offer. Some weeks are just like that.
