Challenge 979: Room for rent

I noticed this curious alcove on the street close to where my band Bedlam has its rehearsal room (and we have a gig coming up on 30th November, if anyone is interested).

Given the cost of housing in London, I'd have thought this vacant space could be turned into a bijou dwelling. Any takers?

NOTE: I'll be away from my desk all next week, so you have two weeks to complete this Challenge.

I think the perspective is fine but Ben has played tricks with the scale. If we look at the size of the room at the back and of the foreground furniture we have to presume that the foreground doors are enormous, (about 1.5 x 4 metres each). I think that’s fine …. just a bit odd and unexpected.

A word of explanation is needed here for the non Brits. The man sitting here is Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, an interior designer who came to fame on British TV screens in the nineteen nineties for his interior makeover show "Changing Rooms".

An engagingly camp personality, he was known for his very colourful and extravagant, (spelt k-i-t-s-c-h), designs and his love of ornate rococo accessories. Viewers either loved him for his exuberance or mocked him for what they saw as very poor taste.

When he sold his large luxury 1.6 million pound six bedroom house the British press had a field day! He was obliged to re-paint the interior in a bland magnolia as, unable to cope with the extraordinary extravagance of his interior decorations, no buyers were forthcoming!

The flamingo wallpaper and that in the bedroom are his designs.

Looking at Ben’s image again their is another much subtler possibility. I had assumed that the floor of the room was at a level with the exterior paving. If we look carefully at the lines of the bottom of the side walls they would actually arrive at a point some way below the entry doors. A much better interpretation is that there are steps going down inside steep enough not to be quite visible. If we accept that the foot of the doors are quite some way above the interior floor the image makes perfect sense.

Sorry Ben for the dissection but I find it intriguing how easy it is to place different interpretations.

Wow, David, that's a superb reconstruction of all I ever disliked about Llewelyn-Bowen and his so-called "work". To me the most surprising thing about Bowen is that he is married to a woman and has two children.

Michael, David & Mariner. One of the things I love about the site is the feedback & advice shared by the members. I have rechecked my measurements & found I made an error with the back wall height - I think that David's comment- I think the perspective is fine but Ben has played tricks with the scale is right on the money. Also the right hand door couldn't open more than 90 degrees due to the wall extension. Thank you for your observations.

They are married for over thirty years and, by all accounts, very solid!

David, I think that wallpaper and decor would leave me starry eyed and dazzled. Nice colors though.
