Retouch Extreme! Tuesday Feb 10
A new direction for my free Retouch Pro webinars this week. I can't explain it better than Doug does on the site:

This was Steve Caplin's initial idea for his very first show several years ago, but at the time we didn't have the technology to make it happen. Now we do, and it's going to be fascinating to see how this goes.

You (yes, YOU) will upload various interesting images. Cool backgrounds, interesting textures, fun objects, weird stock art, literally anything you think might make for an interesting piece of a larger composite image.

Then, at the start of Tuesday's show, Steve will look at what you've uploaded for the very first time and use your images to come up with a photomontage on the spot. He'll explain all the techniques he uses as he goes, and we'll pause every now and again for suggestions from the audience on what to add next.

This will be interesting, informative, and a little scary, all at the same time. You'll see how a professional photoillustrator thinks and works in a real-life time crunch situation. And you'll help guide what the final image looks like.

Great show. Sorry I didn't have a White Rabbit

I knew all those photos would come in handy one day.

Aha! So it was you! A terrific selection of images, Paul, and much appreciated. You really made that show work, so thanks for the effort!

Thank you GBK for the link.

Thank you Steve for a really entertaining show. Great fun!!

You really opened my eyes to the benefits of Blend If.

Also a couple of other minor things I have learned from this that are so basic I am ashamed to even admit what they are!

Very useful.

Thanks

Excellent show, but Steve, what on earth is the filter you where using for your instant magic? I use a combination of changing to LAB mode, surface blur filter, and then specific areas still get the high pass filter. Obviously each one has to have its opacity toned down, and certain areas masked out. But actions makes it all so quick and easy.

It's in the book, Matt - the spread called Magical Realism.

Thanks, will look it up tonight - I have the CS6 book, which I take it is recent enough?

Just watched this on Youtube. A really good programme, thanks Steve and Doug of course.
You were talking about the problems you were having with various tools.
I recently upgraded to Yosemite (wish I hadn't as I think my Mac is a bit too old), but it also meant buying a new Intuous Wacom as I couldn't upgrade my old one.
My new Wacom does exactly what you were talking about, sometimes all I can get it to do is go in straight lines, softness, opacity etc won't work. If I mess around with brush settings all of a sudden it starts working again. This tends to happen when I open a new document.
Is this a problem with Yosemite rather than Adobe do you think?

I think the Wacom problem must be a combination of the two. I don't get the freezing in anything other than Photoshop. I really must investigate further.

I am surprised to hear you had to replace your Wacom. My old Intuos2 works fine with Yosemite as does my very early model Bamboo.

When I get what Steve described it is almost always related to low memory or, more likely, all processors hammering against the roof. I wonder if the Webinar software is using up enough resources to cause this. That is to say processor time not memory.

What I do get constantly with my all my Wacoms, including the new Intuos Pro, is a complete refusal of the Polygonal Lasso to work. This isn't resource related at - all it happens all the time (which is really irritating as it is one of my preferred tools). It is completely erratic. If it does work the displayed selection is delayed one or two clicks behind the pen which makes it completely unusable. If I use the mouse it works perfectly!!

I have reinstalled the Wacom drivers and Photoshop itself but the problem simply won't go away.

I have been using the same Photoshop and the same Wacom for some time. The problem never used to exist. It seemed to start with Mavericks. I don't see how it can be video card related because it occurs on both my MacPro and my MacBookPro with every combination of computer and slate that I can try.

Using a PC, I don't have the same problem, so can neither replicate nor advise. The tool issue I had was that only the clone stamp tool did not work, it merely made barely discernible scribbles. After some experimenting, I found that switching the airbrush tool 'on', the tool worked perfectly....
