Chapter 9: Still Life - 100% photoshop
I got Steve's new book 100% Photoshop and there was a chapter that I wanted to try. It is still a work in progress but I wanted your feedback.

The really hard part was drawing the skull. When I first started, it looked awful particularly in step 2. When I was done, I thought it looked great. Not bad for using the Dodge and Burn and Smudge tools. These are the tools that I don't use much. What are your thoughts.

Re: Chapter 9: Still Life - 100% photoshop
I do intend to get this book, but can't remember when it's available here in the UK, so I would love to see a direct comparison between your rendition and Steve's.
As usual great work, and as we all know there is no one to touch you in this type of work; however, it would be interesting to experiment with sharpening both the skull and candle: it might work, or it might not. And what about experimenting with more of a dynamic contrast of shadow and light on the skull?

What I really, really want to know who is the best at this kind of work: You or Steve? Show us the picture from Steve's book!

Nice Still Life, I like it.

I am also learning new things from Steve's new book. It is treasury. I am trying the chapter "The desk drawer" and I am in half way.

Michael,

Thanks for the tip on the sharpening. I'll keep that in mind. I think I made the left side of the candle a little soft which I think it should not be soft. On the skull, I think I made it to soft with the Smudge Tool. I am trying to fix those problems.

Emil,

Excellent work!! I'm looking forward for you to post a finished version. This chapter would be next for me when I'm done with chapter nine.

Great work Luis. I am waiting for the book from Amazon and am looking forward to attempting the chapters. I'd guess the skull must be very hard to draw and I agree with your point about the left hand edge of the candle. For me the main points are:-

The perspective of the candle holder, I believe the elipse should be slightly shallower

The overall scale somehow looks wrong. The skull is big in comparison to the cloth and the candle looks immense compared with the table.

Stronger shading needed on the cloth, but I appreciate this is work in progress.

Without seeing the book, its very difficult to comment though.

Emil- that looks excellent to me.

Nick

Thank you Luis and Nick for your comment.

I am really surprise how easily you can draw these thing in photoshop. I have never "draw" in PS. With Steve's new book it looks that it is much more easy.

Have a fun with 100% Photoshop. I am really enjoying it.

Emil

Re: Chapter 9: Still Life - 100% photoshop
I got my book about a week ago. Actually I have 2. I orignally ordered from Barnes and Noble, towards the end of March they informaed me, as they couldn't be sure of delivery date, they would cancel my order unless I contacted them within 24 hours.
I didn't and instead I ordered a book from the Book Deposit, as suggested by Faith, a lot cheaper as they don't charge postage..
Received my book from the book Deposit on the 14th of April and a few days later later the one from Barnes and Noble so I'm now fighting them for a refund.

Luis,

You have chosen the most difficult object in the book - the skull! That's why I left it until the very end!

As for the candle - the bright spot on the wall should surely coincide with the flame? Otherwise, this is a very good attempt.

Emil - fantastic objects!

Michael - it really isn't about "who's best". This is not a competition! But of course you can see the chapter openers from my book in the first post of the 100% Photoshop forum, here.

Re: Chapter 9: Still Life - 100% photoshop
Here is my final image for this chapter. I spent weeks on this and I am pleased on how it turned out. I'm sure there are some mistakes like there is one book missing. I re-did the skull and I think it is better than what I did before. I added some stuff to this image like the brick wall and the ice cubes.

Now it is time to work on another chapter.

That looks really good, The only negative thing I'd say is that the scull seems to be hovering.
I'm working through the book from the front (for now), most unusuall for me, working on the desk drawer at the moment, so much work, but great fun.

Still life with ice cubes - now that's something the old masters never thought of. This is looking great, Luis, but just a couple of comments: you need a shadow beneath the sheet, and the shadow in the background seems to do a little loop over the metronome - take out the piece of shadow between there and the candle.

Good skull!

Re: Chapter 9: Still Life - 100% photoshop
Thanks Vibeke and Steve for your comments. I'll make changes to the shadows. This chapter has been tough for me, particularly the skull. Besides the skull, using the Smudge Tool was a challenge for me because I never use this tool that much.
