A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Steve,
why don't you start a new section of this forum called the Readerīs Tutorials Section.

Interesting techniques used during (for instance) the Friday Challenges could be brought up here and described here in a clearer fashion than by just using words. Not all people have their own websites where they can post tutorials.

If and when you see a particular effect in a picture you could ask that person to put together a tutorial and post that in this section.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Excellent idea, Hans-Erik. The only problem is that the forum software only allows one image per post. In order for this to work, I think people would have to host the images elsewhere, and then link to them in the text. Do you think this would be OK? (It would save my bandwidth, too!)

Let's get a couple of comments here about the best way to go about this section, and we'll start it off.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
perhaps tutorials could be posted step by step and the others could then print that page.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
I'm always doing tutorials on my website, at present I'm finishing one of Tweening in Flash. I really ought to make more tutorials however they do take such a long time.

Maiden, I've seen your tutorials. When is your book coming out? Like Steve's, explainations not too "over your head" with a little sense of humor.Great job. I could use all the help I can get. Thanks for sharing!

Steve, as for hosting elsewhere, if you build the site, they will come, guarenteed!

Don't worry, David, just tell everybody to see what Maiden have done on her website.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
What Steve is suggesting is that people post their tutorials here but because of the forum limitations, the images would need to be hosted elsewhere and linked into the post manually.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
I guess what mguyer is indicating is that each step, if a picture is included, can be a separate posting. I believe that could work if we don't have other possiblities.

Hmm, that could become awfully messy.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Could a tutorial be done with instructions, step by step, 1-2-3-4-5, with a before and after picture?

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Yes it could but text only tutorials are often very hard to follow.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
What if it were through email. Maybe when someone creates a tutorial, save as a PDF, load it onto this website somehow...and click on the link to download or have the PDF file sent to you through email. The only bandwidth it would require is that of the file and transfer...

Or more simply, yet a little more troublesome, is if someone has a tutorial... and it is requested by a member, let the member put a post "I would like to see your tutorial, here is my email" and have the supplier forward it to that address.

Well, there's my two cents at least.

That's not such a bad idea. Of course, for people without Macs, they'd have to have Acrobat or a 3rd party utility to convert to PDFs. As far as bandwidth is concerned, it would be less than having the images because it would just be a link and be downloaded on demand - as long as they aren't 600gb hi-res images!!

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Thanks David. If this process were to be considered, my only concern is that some people...such as myself, are limited to send and receive files of a certain size or smaller. (yahoo only permits 10 megabytes or less total file size) Others are 5 or less. So there would more than likely have to be a maximum file size that everyone can agree on. That would also tremendously save Steve's bandwidth.

If necessary, the sender could also save the tutorial in sections... such as chapters in a book. In order to permit a universal max. file size.

The statement on my last post is if we were to use email in any part of the equation.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
A 10Mb pdf would only be necessary if it was going to print. Typically, they could easily be less than 1mb. If you look at Steve's examples, they weigh in at 100-300kb.

Re: A Readerīs Tutorial Section
Oh, well then...there are no other problems that I can think of if we were to use this method. I certainly would like to see a tutorial section on this website. It would definately seem like a sort of continuation of Steves book, except it's His students doing the teaching this time around

His life's work evolving?? maybe?

What's wrong with that? If people are clever enough to write a tutorial that others find useful, then a couple of [img] tags shouldn't be beyond them.

For those of you using PCs, PDFCreator is a good choice for creating PDF-files. It can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
