Neal, I find Flash tools easy to use also but not as powerful as Illustrator, although you can create stunning effects in Flash, you can create an even more impressive array of top quality illustrations in Illustrator. There seems to be a consenus of opinion that Steve's style of writing should be employed in doing an Illustrator book because it's not so much what Illustrator can do but how to work more efficiently within Illustrator to speed up your work-flow, as like you said it takes an enormous amount of time doing anything in Illustrator. If we had some insight into tip & tricks on how to cheat in Illustrator then we could output illustrations far better and faster therefore making it an essential tool for our designs rather than some behemoth of a program that we daren't even think about using. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Thank you Maiden, You're the best. I don't use Illustrator for much more than web site wireframes, and application flow charts, logo and type design. I'll use it to create complex paths that are imported into Photoshop. When I did more print design, I made complex mechanicals and die-lines. But I've seen fantastic illustrations and comps of web pages done in Illustrator, I'd like to know to do them. The program has swelled in size and has menus galore. I need some straight talk on how to use it. |

To go along with the group; I think I have beeen using Illustrator sicne Version 3, on an on and off basis. Playing with it quite often, I get a pretty good feeling of what it can do in a "global" sense. I knew I did no know a thing when I met a graphic designer colleague that used ONLY illustrator to do ALL her work ( even photoshop type illustrations). Note that she was creating illustrations, not retouchng photos or doing photo mongage (here first name is Luce, and we used to call her Luce-trator). I know have 6 G-designers that just got Ill CS2 and have no clue in what it is different then their Ill 8. They do mainly complex (real complex) decals for vehicles. At work, I gave a 2 hour seminar on tricks in Photoshop. all coming from Steve's 3rd edition (you sold 4 more in Canada because of me!) and people were asking: "any tricks on Illustrator?". Mine are too basic to share with people, but a book like what Steve is talking about would be a great help to pros that do not have the time to go through the hole manual. Just my 2¢ _________________ |

You're not the only one, Pierre. About 4 years ago, shortly after purchasing the 1st edition, I travelled down to Adobe's British HQ in London with a number of colleagues from the bank I work for. We were there to see a demonstration of Adobe's portal software for consideration for our own intranet. Anyway, my boss had arranged with the Adobe guys for a "Photoshop tricks" demo as a fun way to wrap up the day. First thing the guy did was load up a familiar picture of a smiling face - and proceed to close his eyes, followed by a succession of quick "cheats" . . ALL from Steve's book ! He did seem a little deflated when I informed my (dazzled) colleagues of the origin of all his examples ! He muttered something like, "..yeah, the Caplin book.." and wrapped up his presentation ! _________________ |

How To Cheat In Illustrator - sign the petition !!
I just popped on the forum to make this very suggestion, seems I’m a bit late as there’s a whole petition going on. Well for what it’s worth this is a book I would very much like. I’ve been teaching myself Photoshop over the past few years, mainly by trial and error, and had got what I thought was some pretty good results, but I had always thought there were some limitations with Photoshop as I couldn’t always get the effect on screen that I wanted… this was until I read Steve’s book. Turns out I didn’t know half of what Photoshop could do. I had probably read about certain tools etc in other books, but I’d never remember what I’d learnt. I’ve found reading HTCIP a totally different experience. What amazes me is that I can read the book without even working through the examples at the same time, and it still engages me so that later I can still remember the techniques I’ve learnt, and can’t wait to try them out. Many Thanks for a great book Steve… but if I could just get to grips with Illustrator. |
