I havn't hear about Indesign replacing PageMaker. Indesign really isn't as much a word processing tool, as much as it is a page layout tool. You could certainly use it for word processing, but its power is really designed around page layout and output.

Pagemaker has been seen off some time ago, John - Adobe stopped publishing it a while back. While InDesign has certainly replaced PageMaker as far as Adobe is concerned, their main target was always Quark. And as far as most designers are concerned, they've succeeded: XPress has now been pushed firmly into the No 2 slot, despite having had the market more or less to itself for over a decade. PageMaker was always a home/small business tool, whereas Quark was the professional equivalent.

I wrote and designed the first edition of How to Cheat in Photoshop in Quark. All subsequent editions, and all my other books, have been written in InDesign.

Hi Steve,

Sorry if this topic has been updated elsewhere, but is there any news on this proposed book? I've recently come into possession of Illustrator, and it would be a huge help to have a down-to-earth type of beginner book on it, as you did with the Photoshop range.
Maybe you could recommend a book for me if you’re not writing one yourself?
I know absolutely nothing about Illustrator, so I'd be very much obliged. Thanks a million!

The Illustrator project's been put on hold for the time being. I just have too much other work to do right now!

I don't know of any good Illustrator books - and that's largely why I want to write one. I just need a spare lifetime to do it in....

Keep us updated on whether you start it back up. Would really like a Illustrator book to keep me busy with.

One of the best Illustrator books available (until Steve gets around to writing his!!) is the Illustrator WOW! series but they do assume a certain familiarity with the programme and its terminology.

Thanks for the info GKB... so there's no beginner-ish book around that you know of? I did look on Amazon and a few other sites, but most of the Illustrator books on there seem to be geared towards people who already know what they're doing.
That SO isn't me.

Celia,
The only other one that I could recommend might be the Illustrator Bible. It's really a more detailed manual than an instruction book but it does tell you how to get things done.

There is a big hole in the Illustrator book market which Steve might get manage to get done in his re-incarnation!!!

Thanks GKB! I'll look that one up
In the meantime we'll just have to keep prodding Steve with a sharp stick til he comes up with the goods, eh?

Or!

Maybe we could try the old "shameless flattery/hopeful bribery/guilt trip" routine?............

...... Perhaps?
No?
Grow up Celia?
Thought so.

Re: How to Cheat in Illustrator?
Lynda.com have some great video tutorials for Illustrator. The most basic assumes no prior knowlege.

I spent a few days last year going through a couple of DVDs and I felt I was fluent in Illustrator at the end.

I have forgotten a lot of the esoteric bit though now

I know you can't easily watch a video while riding the bus, but there is no substitute for actually watching an expert.

I think Steve should do more video tutorials.

Re: How to Cheat in Illustrator?
I love Illustrator and would snap up a How to cheat in Illustrator book by Steve. It is so difficult to find an advanced Illustrator book. I used to get the Adobe Illustrator Techniques Magazine but they have stopped printing them. My only recourse was www.illustratortechniques.com which has turned into Layers Magazine. Very disappointing.
