My first major project with Photoshop
I have had Photoshop for years and I have boughtmany books to help me learn, I just kept getting frustrated and give up. I bought Steve's first edition of "How to cheat in Photoshop" It was such a great book full of fun things to do, it helped me learn Photoshop much faster because if I ran into a lesson that used a tool I didn't know how to use I would go out and find a basic tutorial on that tool so that I could come back and do the lesson in Steve's book. The fun cool things in the book made me want to learn, something that all the other books fail to do.. I just bought his 2nd edition and can't wait for it to get here. Here is one of my first Photoshop projects I would like some feedback both good and bad. I think to understand what I was trying to do I will explain a little bit about it. Fargo North Dakota is where I live, it is on the border of North Dakota and Minnesota. There is a river that divides the 2 states. Fargo is a small place mainly farmland and it also has a state university and a sports/entertainment venus called the fargodome. It also has a train station and a old time movie house. My idea was to fade all the pictures into one and show the river running thru the center.... I appreciate any and all comments and remember it is my first project.. Thanks for such a great book Steve, I used several things I learned in your book to complete this ![]() |

Ron, The idea of running the river through the middle is a good one - but I think those overhead views detract from the sense of the image. There are simply too many perspectives conflicting with each other. Wouldn't it work better if you made a much narrower shot, with the Fargo/Fargodome signs and clock cut out and placed in the bends of the river? Glad you're enjoying the book, and especially pleased you've taken in the section on layer masks. Better than erasing, huh? Steve |

Interesting concept ... great example of how one artist eye and another differ. I am not familiar with the heartland of North Dakota or Minnesota but am in the heartland of California. Both areas have vast areas of farm land. I love the river idea ... I like the positioning of the clock and movie theater at each side. The idea is the area is rural and civilization (or features of) are on the periphery. I imagine the image would easily be understood by those who live in the area ... just as those in my area would understand a montage from this area. The true question is did the image fulfill what was expected of it when it was created. Just a different perspective. Linda ![]() |
