Camera - HELP !!!
Hi Steve,

I'm struggling to get to grips with the cool pix 5400. Could you tell me what scene modes you tend to use for taking a picture in a normal, reasonably lit room.

This camera seems hopeless unless there is lights everywhere. I must surely have the camera set up wrong !

I took it to my 4 year old sons tae kwon do grading on Saturday, but most of the images came out blurred. Should I use the shutter priority setting to eliminate this ? .. The normal point and shoot mode does not give good results in doors !

Thankfully, the curves box brightened up one of the photo's that had turned out not to bad - Thank god for Photoshop.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: Camera - HELP !!!
Paul,

Yes, there is a problem shooting in low light with the Coolpix range - and, indeed, with most compact digitals. That's why I recently got myself a Canon 300D, which has a much larger lens that's simply capable of letting more light in.

I'm assuming you weren't using the flash for these shots, which is correct - it would only work if you're pretty close to the subject. If you aren't, you'll simply get very dark images. But the results shouldn't be as bad as you say they are. Seems to me the most likely thing is that you've got the ISO rating set way too low. Try cranking it up to 400 for indoor shots.

It's disappointing, though, when you take pics at a one-off event and they turn out to be worse than you expected. As you say - Photoshop to the rescue!

I've got a Coolpix 3100, which is described as a 'fun' camera, it doesn't have much in the way of manual control.

Curiously, I found that using 'sport' mode in low light conditions yielded quite good results (I took some pictures at an am-dram panto, don't ask!)). They still needed a little tweaking but on the whole, the quality was good and not that grainy.

Paul,

I see Nikon released a firmware update to the 5400 yesterday. They only mention Camera RAW mode, but it's possible they fixed some exposure issues at the same time.

Re: Camera - HELP !!!
Hi Steve,

Thanks for your advice, I'll try adjusting the iso as you say and see what happens from there.

I'll check out the firmware update later. I'm currently on holiday right now, and replying from an internet cafe, so I'll see how the rest of the shots turn out!

Thanks again.

Paul.
