An endorement and I am not Caplin's son
I hardly ever give unqualified endorsements, but I think I can for this book and the related forums. I've read a bunch of photoshop books, many of which help me to sleep at night because besides being technical the techniques rarely have useful application... I've written a few how-to books, and I can appreciate the attention to detail and follow-up that the author provides here...In fact, never have I seen this kind of dedication and support in any other how-to book on photoshop or any other topic (with the exception of Bolles' What Color Is Your Parachute...but I digress) This book not only gives you step by step, but when a step doesn't work you can come here to post a query. Then you get not only advice from the author, but other practitioners as well. This beats video/CD ROMs, 2 day workshops, and most books hands down. As simple evidence, I found the introductory chapters worth their weight in gold, even though I've studying the Photoshop intensivley for 2 years on my own time. Thanks to Steve and his comrades like Maiden, TrinityOfOne and host of other participants! |

Well it's a lovely community here and Steve's book really is a gem. Only yesterday as I was perusing the books at PC World I found I was heartily recommending Steve's book to a perfect stranger - and I thought gosh I've never done that before for any book I've bought. I don't know if the man just thought I was a nutter though

Martin, You certainly aren't alone with your views. As Maiden says, I often find myself waxing lyrical about Cheat, although not in shops, but then if I happened to notice someone looking at books, I may very well be inclined to do so. I don't think I've ever seen quite as much support for a book before. For someone as busy as Steve, to take time to run a forum and help people out shows a lot of dedication and generosity. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Well, hey, you can probably see my blushes from there. Thing is, I really enjoy Photoshop. And I really get a lot of fun out of this forum. You know when you hold your own party, it's a hell of a lot more work than just turning up to other people's, then there's all the mess and the washing up to sort out in the morning? But it's still your party, and you'd never choose not have another one. Er, or something. |

I would have to say as a complete beginner the book is excellent for me. I also have the Photoshop bible and an easy guide too Photoshop. There is no hook with these other publications, they are boring and don't catch the imagination at all. I cannot put Steves book down now. I contacted Steve on Friday as I was trying something in the book and didnt understand (Maybe because I was reading it from the back to the front) But Steve kindly took time out to call me and explain. I was blown away that he could take time out for a newbie like that. |
