Few forum ideas
I am a recent addition to the forum and had a couple of ideas that I wanted to share. I had my first crack at Steve’s Friday challenge recently which I really enjoyed, I am not a professional working in an artistry field at present so one of the difficulties I have had is coming up with ideas for montages. Throughout Steve’s book there are wonderful illustrations of Steve’s work with the Times and Guardian newspaper. I wondered if rather than a picture for the Friday challenge, Steve gave a brief for us either on a current affair or a fictitious story and each of us produced our own interpretations of what was required for the story? Just an idea. The other idea was maybe an image exchange, I am sure it’s difficult sometimes to source a decent image from somewhere at times and Google doesn’t always throw up the best quality. Rather than the image being posted on the forum and using up vast amounts of bandwidth the request could be accompanied by an email address. Again just an idea. I hope nobody takes offence, the forum is fantastic as it is. I just had these ideas and wondered what others thought. _________________ Eagles may soar high, but weasels dont get sucked into Jet engines. David Brent -The Office |

Re: Few forum ideas
Interesting ideas Chris but I think the Friday Challenge is more realistic as a potential brief than being asked for our own interpretations on say a current event. Because, unless I'm completely wide of the mark, Editors will already an idea of what they want and will be more likely to supply a set of images and ask for the a certain montage to be created than to ask for the montager to create their own interpretation of current affairs. I don't doubt that occassionally Steve will be asked to create something purely from his imagination but mostly editors will have a clear idea of what they want to express in montage. I've always taken the Friday Challenge as a brief that's why I try to get the image turned around as fast as possible (not because I want to be first to post, but because Editors will be looking for a fast turn-around) It's a challenge to me to quicken my work-flow while still maintaining a high quality. I also stick close to the brief with that as a priority and then add whatever comedic elements once I have completed the brief. So with the taxi, smashing it to pieces was my priority and the joke came after. I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the second suggestion with the email address - Do you mean Steve putting up his email address or do you mean we should submit ours? The latter is problematic because as a female on the net I don't want my email being public property and I suppose the same is true for us all, male or female, after all people who make a living from spamming like to surf around indiscriminately picking up email addresses. But perhaps there is an idea within what you are suggesting and that is a weekly newsletter with the Challenge image as an attachment - but that would require more work from Steve and Trinity and whomever designed the website. Anyhow I don't think anyone could take offence to your ideas it keeps the website alive. We should all contribute suggestions on ways it could be improved. Chris, A good idea, there, about the Friday Brief. The reason I hadn't gone this route is that while I have a huge stock of images at my disposal, most people don't - and it would be too much to ask of you all to go scouring the net for suitable images. The Friday Challenge is intended to enhance your Photoshop skills: when you're just playing around in Photoshop you tend to stick to favourite techniques, but being given an idea to execute should make you think in a slightly different way. The fun of the challenge, of course, is not just doing the job but using your imagination to make it funny or topical - and then seeing how other people have approached the same problem. I think it's the fact of several people working together on the same image that makes it more interesting. On the other hand, the idea of a brief occasionally is an appealing one. Do you think I'd need to supply you with some images to work with as well? Or just give free rein to your imaginations? To answer your point, Becky: some art editors know exactly what they want when they commission an illustration. Others just give me the story and let me come up with an idea. Depends on the person! There are plenty of sources of free images on the net, as discussed in previous posts. It sounds to me as if you're asking for an interchange whereby people could ask for a particular image and then have someone else email it to them - is that right? I think we might be getting into serious copyright difficulties there! Steve |

I too thought of this idea a while back (that's what they all say, yeah, I know). I think it has potential but like Steve says, maybe a more periodic thing, once a month possibly? There are plenty of stock images on the Cheat CDs, maybe the brief could be such, that something from there could be used - not actually saying 'use this image' but knowing that one or more of them would work with the story. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Thanks for the reply's all. Becky, I hadnt thought about the privacy of email addresses element here. Steve is right I had meant an interchange of images, I was working on the assumption that lots of these images were copyright free such as clipart discs etc. With regard to your point Steve about you supplying us with the image for the brief or us sourcing our own I am not sure, I think you would get interesting results for both approaches. _________________ Eagles may soar high, but weasels dont get sucked into Jet engines. Chris's idea seems to be a good for the purpose of making one think, if the copyright problem could be resolve. I would oppose an every week project. The present fomat is fine with me, but I am a new commer here and any project will benifit me and that is why I am here. ![]() |
