Which version
Hi. I have photoshop elements 3 and would love to get your book. I am wondering which version would be the best one for me to get since I don't have PSCS2? I realize that I won't have the capability to do anything, but there is still lots to learn. I also have the full version of Painter IX so have some extras available to me.

Thanks.

Hi Pauline

Steve has written a Photoshop Elements 3 book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321375831/qid%3D1132067605/026-0331015-5391645

Its for kids, but may be worth checking out

Ha ha

Reading the amazon summary on the above link, I see Steve is credited as 'Chaplin'

Re: Which version
I saw that version, but that's not what I'm interested in. I like the more realistic stuff in the new books. What I was wondering is if the older version of the cheating photoshop would be closer to elements than the newer version or does it really matter?

Re: Which version
The only problem you will find when using Elements is it does not have masks or the Pen Tool. These are used extensively throughout the book (all revisions). That's not to say it should put you off. There are ways around it, especially with PSE3.

Re: Which version
Masks aren't a problem as I have them as extras. Can a selection tool be used rather than the pen tool? I do have a wacom tablet. I know painter IX has the pen tool, but I have not had the time to really play with the program.

Re: Which version
Yes you can always use another selection tool, but of course the cut-out wont be as clean

Re: Which version
Yes, it does lack Channels and Curves, also CMYK, the Extract filter and a few more besides. There are add-ons for Curves, however. The Hidden Power of Elements books include these on the CD or they can be bought separately from the author's site.

Re: Which version
Although some of the book uses Photoshop-only tools, there are a lot of general techniques that apply equally well to Elements. As to which version - well, the latest version is the biggest and the best, in my own opinion, so I'd say there's really no point going for an earlier one! I had to take out a few of the earlier tutorials from the second edition, but these are all included as PDFs on the CD so they're all there if you want to refer to them.

If you do decide to get the book, do let us know how you get on with it and Elements!

Re: Which version
Excellent. Thanks for the info Steve. I do have curves and channels as add ons and also have the pen tool available in Painter which works with elements, so hopefully I can work my way through.

I will be adding your newest book to my Christmas list. (well actually ordering it and handing it to my kids with an envelope for $ donations to pay for it. )
