Whence cometh your images?
Bin thinkin'. Each week I raid the Google Images store for inspiration. But sometimes I can't find the specific image I'm looking for and, as in life, have to compromise. Does anyone know of and use alternative free image sources? Does anyone use cheap sources of images like iStockphoto at $1 (67p) a shot?
Steve, do you subscribe to and regulary use image banks?

There are many great sources of images - some free, some cheap, some downright pricey. Best of the lot, for me, is Photo Objects, but it is expensive if you're not doing this stuff for a living.

Good cheap sites, as well as the excellent iStockphoto, include Dreamstime, which has a fantastic range of images.

There are also some excellent free sites out there - such as Morgue File, the slower Stock Xchange, and the rather limited Free Images.

For more specific free images, you can't do better for textures than Mayang's Texture Library; and there's a huge range of cars at Diesel Station.

Also, at the risk of extreme pedantry, I feel I have to point out that "cometh" is of course the singular archaic form of "come"; it would be fine in the context of "whence cometh thine image", but doesn't apply in the plural.

Sometimes I just type what I want into a search and come up with something, e.g. when I wanted to put Queen Elizabeth at 10 Downing.

Is there any such thing as a CD or DVD collection of images I could purchase with images like those such from Photo Objects? That site is far too expensive for a student like me, and the other sites simply don't seem to offer the right kind of images for what I need.

I have an 8 CD set of Hemera Photo Objects. Most of them seem to be the same images as Steve uses. I think there are 50,000 on the disks. They are quite hi res too. I can't remember the price.

Re: Whence cometh your images?
There are three volumes in the Hemera Photo-Objects series, each containing 50,000 images of around 600 pixels square. A lightning-fast browser finds images as you type the name, and it's a truly amazing collection. The images are all cutouts with alpha channels rather than paths, and you can drag them direct from the browser into Photoshop. Each volume sells for around $60 to $90, and they're fantastic value for money.

However - Hemera no longer makes the sets, and I've been unable to find out who does. You can still find them through the Amazon marketplace, and on eBay.

It's my most frequently used resource for images, particularly when I want quick access to 'fillers' - background elements, furniture, teapots, mugs, VCRs, and so on. Highly recommended!

Thanks Steve, I managed to find the whole 50000 Hemera-Photo objects collection online. Is it literally just 'objects'? I more interested in finding photography of people, without having to pay a fortune.

Also, isn't 600 pixels square somewhat of a small resolution for someone like you? What do you do when you need larger images?

Try this book. Very reasonable for what you get!
