Off to Design School....maybe?
I'm meeting with the Graphic Arts instructors this weekend at Atlanta Intercontinental University in the hopes of ataining a degree in Design. The school costs more than I can afford, though. I should qualify for grants, etc. I'd like to be fully prepared for the meeting with them. I plan to bring my portfolio and other works, but does anyone have recomendations that could help the "whooo" factor when I see them?

Also, what would be some good questions that I would need to ask them?

Chris

One piece of advice is not to show anything that is sub-standard. Only take your very best work. I find that large, well printed, images look great rather than pokey litle images.

Best of luck when you get to the university.

Good luck Chris.

Maybe take CDs with your copies of your work on as well as printed material? I'm thinking it will give them a choice on how they want to view it.

Thank you for the helpful comments, Gordon & Wayne. I've compiled some good works. Well, at least...I think they're good!

I was trying to come up with a CD, with the portfolio displayed as a flash library. Since these instructors are also webmasters & flash experts...I may lose the ashtetics of the portfolio in my very rudimentary knoweledge of flash.

Re: Off to Design School....maybe?
Well, I had everything prepared & ready to go...just to find out on Friday that not one of the three instructors I was supposed to meet with would be available for the appointment on Saturday; one that was scheduled three weeks ago! But the admissions officer still wanted me to drive the three hour trip to the school so I can fill out the financial contracts! What? If the instructors don't have the time for one student, how on earth could they have the time for a class? More than that, if I were to attend the school and have a question on the material...who would I ask? An instructor who didn't give me the time of day when I was looking forward to meeting him? No, if I'm going to spend $20,000/semester on an education, I'd certainly want to meet the people teaching me prior to signing my name on a contract!

I was really looking forward to Saturday, but maybe there's another avenue for me that I'm just not seeing yet.

Sorry to read this, Chris. I am optimistic by nature; there IS something waiting to suit you better, I am sure. Open your ears and eyes and do keep the spirit!

I think you've made the right decision there, Chris. A shame, but it doesn't sound as if they'd take you seriously enough. And that's a lot of cash for each semester!

Three hours, though? Is there really nowhere closer to home that you could study?

Sorry to hear this Chris but I think you're right not to continue with them. That sounds like a heck of a lot of money per semester to be treated like that.

Good luck with whatever alternative you find.

What is the saying? ... When the student is ready the Master will come to them. Have faith and tell many people about it. Only this way will you meet the one who will be able to help you.

Hmm perhaps it's more "If the student has cash, the Master has already been, gone, and legged it to the nearest pub. Ah-so Grasshopper!"

Anyway, good luck with finding a more reasonable Design College, tank - I'm sure there are many more reputable schools around.

Goodluck.

Re: Off to Design School....maybe?
Thank you for the kind words, everyone. The college prides itself in being one of the leading & cutting edge design institutes around. They have much to offer, as well as a catchy program that places you in a carreer design position with corporate offices throughout Atlanta. It is also the nearest college specializing in design.

Then again, who needs college when there are enough online resources for one to learn virtually anything?!

Granted, having that piece of paper does warrant additional levereage when negotiating pay! I've always been frustrated by that fact.

Thanks again everyone!
