A new way of looking at photos
Since reading the book, I have started both to take and view photos differently. An example of taking photos differently would be last weekend at the zoo when rather than trying to get shots of the animals without other people in the background; I just shot a few extra backgrounds to move the animals to later.

By viewing photos differently, I mean that now I am more conscious of how easy the manipulation of images is, I am looking for signs of editing in a picture when the photo just seems a bit ‘too convenient’

For example, look at this picture form a website news story entitled ‘Chancellor Alistair Darling leaves Parliament in London after delivering his first pre-budget report’

To me that looks edited and I suspect that..
1) If he was even in that car, he was barely visible and the levels inside the vehicle have been turned up so much that it now looks fake.
2) The background of the houses of parliament is from another shot. It just does not look genuine to me. The view through the back window looks wrong and if that is Big Ben reflected in the door window, I can’t see any angle that would produce that shot.

However, I would be very glad to be hear opinions of how that could be a genuine image or be told that I should stop dreaming up skeptical conspiracy theories and just go out and have a beer or something instead.

Cheers
Paul

Actually, I suspect this is a single real photo. Firstly, if a flash was used then the interior of the car would be illumated like this - although it may of course have been brightened afterwards. But, mainly, because it seems unlikely anyone would have gone to the trouble of doing this as a montage!

I take your point about the reflection of Big Ben, though. But with a curved window, it's just possible - and I'd guess that's actually a reflection of the tower in the middle of the Houses of Parliament, rather than the clock itlsef.

I would have said it was a real photo a polarising filter could have been used to reduce the reflection on the window and the flash would certainly have illuminated to that extent. The image in the rear window is of Big Ben and the reflection in the side window looks to be (as Steve said) the main tower at Westminster as can been seen from this photo I took on Thursday (18/10/07)

thereby placing the car on the main road adjacent Parliament where a lot of the Press Photographers accumulate.

If it was a fake they probably wouldn't have bothered to put the tie over the seatbelt.
