Just got my first client!
I've got a website showing my photo restoration work, and I've just had my first client from it! She wanted a woman cut out of a picture and superimposed on a street scene. I did it today, and I'm quite happy with it. I've just emailed it to her (with a watermark, which will be removed if she likes it and when she sends payment), so I hope she's happy with it!

Oooh, I feel like a businesswoman now!

Re: Just got my first client!
I've taken the photos off (see below), but it was basically a montage of a person into a street scene.

Great work. Congratulations on the commission. You do realise you have now officially sold your soul to Steve.

LOL @ David!

I'm going to take the photos down now, as the photos and their copyright belong to the client. She's happy with the work, btw!

Re: Just got my first client!
Well, I've done another 3 jobs for the same client, and I've just done another one for someone who wanted 2 photos restored. Keep your fingers crossed - I've only been advertising for a couple of months and I'm getting a steady flow of enquiries and a few jobs, so it looks as if this business will take off (unlike my retail business, which has made one sale since February!)

Re: Just got my first client!
HI Kate

thats really good news.

Kate i hope you dont mind me asking but......what is your retail business ? and what form of advertising are you doing ? ie local papers, yellow pages ect. And what format are you using ? for instance are you pitching a very professional clean looking advert clearly at corporate customers or is more scaled down for local resident type stock.

the reason i ask is simply because i am wanting to slowly make a career change over the next 12-24 months and im just wondering how you yourself have started to venture into a new venture (forgive the pun).

Congratulations and hope it takes off in a big way !

Re: Just got my first client!
Hi Johnny

First off, my retail business is lingerie! http://www.evetoday.co.uk
I think I've got too much competition there from the big outlets.

On the photo restoration side, I'm advertising online at the moment. Most of my enquiries come from http://www.freeindex.co.uk
I'm mainly pitching at individuals, rather than corporate business. I'm angling it at scrapbookers, local history enthusiasts and genealogists. I've only recently started the business (about two months ago), so I haven't done a lot of advertising yet, but I'm working on that one. I have ME/CFS, so things are going at snail's pace at the moment! I'm not looking to make my first million, but I'm seeing a steady rise, so I'm happy.

The selling point seems to be the personal approach - I spend a lot of time talking to clients by email or phone, to make sure I'm clear on exactly what they want.

Having said all that, don't take all my business!! Although I think there's room for all of us - I'm about half way down the first page on freeindex, and I haven't quite worked out why they choose me instead of any of the people listed above me. When I work that one out, I'll angle my advertising a bit more effectively.

I think to some extent, the local angle works as well - two of my enquiries this week have mentioned that they are local to me, and one of them actually dropped off the photos in person because she didn't want to trust precious family memories to the postal service.

Hope this helps, and good luck if you decide to go ahead!

Kate your links won't work properly with the fullstop at the end of them remove the fullstop and the links will work.

Re: Just got my first client!
Hi Kate

thats very interesting to hear, i was pleasantly surprised to see your website (i could look at women in thongs all day long ).

And dont worry i dont really intend on going into photo restoration to be honest i was just interested in your marketing and sales stragegies thats all.
I have been self employed in business for years now, but after 17 years being a plumber/gas fitter im getting slightly tired of it. There are no challenges in it anymore if you know what i mean, i guess once you know your job well enough it becomes a bit dull.
Not only that photography has always been a passion of mine and im just trying to work out if its feasable to career change in such a radical way and actually make it finacially viable.
Although plumbings a bit boring for me now, i must admit the money is fantastic, so it may be a bit tricky.

But hopefully with new skills learnt in photoshop and more money invested in equipment and the right marketing i might be able to squeeze in somewhere in the photographic, montage or other photo area market place.
