Shortcut modifier key not working
Having trouble getting modifier key (short cut) not working. I'm working in chapter 2 page 43. The "ctrl, shift, alt, T" does not copy the original layer. I've tried hitting all 4 keys at the same time & also tried hitting, C, S, Alt then T. All combonations are not working. Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
This combination will work only if you've just applied a transformation, in which case it should repeat it with a copy. Make sure you're working on a visible, active layer with some content.

Which version of Photoshop are you using? Can you give us a screen shot of your Layers palette so we can check your document is set up correctly?

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
How are you creating this screen shot? Only it's coming out too tiny to be visible! Plus, rather oddly, it's a .psd file, which is why it isn't showing up in the browser window. So can you either save a new screen shot - or, which may be better, upload your full Photoshop file so I can have a look at that.

What I can see, though, is that there's an additional layer which isn't either the hand or the tick layer from the tutorial file. Perhaps you should start with one of these existing layers instead, just in case you've made a mistake in the layer you're creating.

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
I created it using Alt+print screen then cropped to the layer section. Saved as on desk top & uploaded. I will upload the file, hopefully it's not too large. For learning purpose can you tell me how to insert/create a screen shot, this will be helpfull in the future?

I did create a new layer per the instructions on step, created via the new layer button on the layer pallett. I also tried using the existing layers & got the same results. Will add file soon, only this time will save a jpeg to decrease size.

I think you need to describe exactly the steps you're taking, and then we can pinpoint the moment at which things go wrong. Believe me, this technique really does work!

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
After opening the file I click on the tick layer, then click on the rectangle tool. Draw a small rectangle in the top center. Click on the fill tool. change default color to blue & click in the rectangle to fill it. I then click CTRL+T to enter free tranform mode, hit the ALT button & click on the center marker & drag it down to the center of the layer, after which i hold the Shift key with my cursor outside the rectangle, while still in transform mode, i move mouse until the rectangle moves twice. While still in free transform mode i click Edit & Undo. At this point i click CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+T and nothing happens (while still in transform mode. When i created a new layer i did the same step but on the new layer, i was also unable to get the exercise on page 41 to work, I just moved on to this step thinking i could get this one to work.

Thanks for your help, it's very very rare to get the publisher to help you first hand, i really appriciate that, that answers the question as to why your book is so popular & came highly recommended to me.

What is "modifier key" as in "Be sure to press the modifier key before you begin drawing, or you'll simply draw from the center...."

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
Billy,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - I didn't see you'd posted this reply. Here's the mistake: after you've transformed the rectangle while holding the Shift key, press Enter to apply the transformation. Unless you do this, Photoshop doesn’t see a transformation as having taken place at all. Now proceed as before, and it should work OK.

Elaine08,

A "modifier key" simply means a key that modifies the behaviour of another key, such as alt, shift and ctrl.

Re: Shortcut modifier key not working
I hope i am putting this on the right page.

My problem is using the pen tool on the cup exercise.
i have out lined the cup and inside the handle. i have selected the icon on the penpallet. my icon on the far right is showing- EXCLUDE OVERLAPPING AREAS. So when i try ctr, entre to make the selection only the cup and not the handle is selected. It is driving me crazy.

Hello Ann,
If you look on page 24 Putting the Pen into practice you will see that you have to click on the fourth button on Path Mode, which is the overlap mode, if any of the other buttons are selected you will get a different result. Try it.
