I am totally befuddled
I bought PS CS2 a year or so ago, but use it infrequently and then for only minor photo adjustments. Now, I'm trying to learn to use CS2 and I keep running into conflicts with the instructions and what I perceive to be the process described in HtCiP. I know that it's I who is in error, so some help, please. If there is someone near Orange County, CA, perhaps I can get tutored for a jump start. The things I'm not getting into my head are the basics and it starts with Selection: the fundamentals using the Marquee, the Lasso and Magic Wand, and QuickMask. For example, using QuickMask in QM 1, I can't subtract from the selection after setting up as in the example. In the Lasso and Magic Wand, I can't get the Lasso tool to select the fences posts even though I seem to be following your instructions. Very frustrating.

Have you tried having a look at the video tutorials on the CD. having used both the CS2 and CS3 versions of the book extensively, I'm ashamed to admit I have only recently discovered the Video tutorials.
Can't believe how much more I learnt.
Good Luck, and for specific question, use this forum. the members and Steve are amazingly good at answering questions.

When using the Lasso on the fence post, the order in which you hold and release the modifier keys is important. This is because they serve two separate functions: the alt key will subtract from a selection if you hold it before you start to make the new selection, and will trace straight lines if you press it after you have started to trace.

With QuickMask, make sure you've double-clicked the QM icon at the bottom of the tool palette and set it to show Selected areas, as described at the beginning of the QM section.

If this still isn't working for you, come back and explain exactly where you're having trouble, and we'll try to help.
