Taking the plunge: PC to Mac
I've been itching for a mac laptop, and with the new versions coming out I'm unsure if now is a good time to buy...or should I wait a few months for a better deal?

I've been looking at the Macbook Pro 2.4ghz duel core (Since the 2.6 is about $300 more, and the only difference is .2 ghz extra speed. It doesn't seem feasible, or even make sense to get a 2.6. Am I missing something there?)

Anyway, I guess I'm most curious about what some of you guys are using out there. With the Intel processors, will I be able to run .EXE files with the macbook pro? I have some programs that are only available for Windows OS, if I were to switch to mac...will the windows-based programs run as efficiently or more efficiently on the mac platform...?

Thanks in advance,
--Chris

It's highly unlikely that there will be a price drop on the latest models, you may find some shops selling the older models for less to clear stock, though. There are only small differences between the two - assuming you are talking about the two 15" models: the more expensive has 512Mb Video RAM and a 250Gb hard-disc compared to the 256/200Mb of its brother and there's now only .1MHz between them. Do you definitely need a laptop? The iMacs are considerably cheaper.

All current Macs can run Windows but not natively, you need to use Bootcamp - the dual boot system built into Leopard - or one of the virtual machines such as Parallels (which is what I run) or VMWare's Fusion. You need a licensed copy of Windows, of course: XP SP2 or above. Some say it runs smoother on the Mac but it's not a 100% fact. From my experience, it works perfectly well.

Whichever you go for, you will enjoy using them.

Thanks David for the reply. A laptop is the only option for me. I work on-location too much to get the iMac. I didn't know about the vRam, that makes a difference. The 17" is what I'm hoping to get. :fingers crossed:

I guess I need to get hold of Microsoft to see if it's possible to transfer the license of XP from my current laptop to the new mac.

If you're planning to use it on a day-to-day basis, you definitely need the 17"; or an external display.

Now that sparks an idea. Have you seen the new 23 inch portable displays yet? You know, the ones that fold up to the size of a wallet and is both lighter and thinner than the macbook air? iwunt1

Actually, yes but they don't fold up, that's just ridiculous, they come as a jigsaw in a suede pouch.
