The Content Aware Scale feature in CS4
I love this new feature which intuitively seems to be aware of scaling people's proportions correctly when using this feature.

What follows are three different sets of images: first the original, second the one that has had conventional "squashing", and third, the one that has had "Content Aware Scale" applied to the squashed image.

In the last image of each set you'll notice that the tell-tale elongated stretched picture is absent.

Don't forget to click on each image for more detail:

Wow I was unaware of this! Definately a cool feature.

The end of disgustingly squashed images?

It's not half as good as I'd hoped. It's nothing like the demo video from the company who originally came up with the idea. It can easily leave patterns in the image when enlarging and on complicated images things get cut off or are misaligned.

I know it can't work miracles and it does do a good job within it's limitations. Despite wishing for this feature for 18 months I hardly ever use it.

Actually, there's a lot more to this feature than you might think at first glance. It works particularly well on cutout objects, and this is something I go into in How to Cheat in Photoshop CS4 which seems to have been largely overlooked.

Take a cutout of, say, a lamppost. You'll find you can stretch it or compress it vertically as much as you like without it distorting: only the relatively featureless pole will be affected. Or try it sideways on a gun or rifle, and only the barrel will extend.

Paul, if you're getting ugly artefacts or objects being compressed that shouldn't be, try defining an area (quickmask is good for this) and saving it as a selection channel. You can tell CAS not to touch this area when scaling. Works very well.

This really is a feature that deserves further experimentation!
