I feel kind of bad....
Around 2 year ago I bought a photo editing software from Microsoft and I used it for a long time. 3 month ago I started 2 courses on photoshop CS3 (basic & intermediate). Now, every time I have to alter a photo, I found my self going back to the microsoft software instead of CS3. I feel bad that I am stuck with this Microsoft software, I guess it is because it is easier, faster, if I want to make any changes I just click the images instead of the layers....I feel bad that I do not see my self moving forward with photoshop...I was wondering if this happens to anybody before.. |

Hi Ema All I can suggest is that you stick with PS, which is an incredibly powerful tool. The opportunities offered via layers and masks, not forgetting the blend modes and filters will allow you to do things with pictures only PS can do. The only limitation is your imagination. Nick |

Hi, Nick. When you have to make quick change to a picture, do you "always" go to PS? or you use another quick software? |

Re: I feel kind of bad....
My dad was the same. He's 75 now and uses PS exclusively but it took me years to wean him off MicroGrafx Picture Publisher. Even when I showed him how much better PS was he'd end up back on Picture Publisher for cloning and a couple of other things. PS does look daunting and because it's a professional piece of software it doesn't have the "gimmicks" that people are used to from other photo editing software. So it takes a few extra steps to come up with similar results, but once you get the hang of it your results will be much better. As suggested above stick with it. Persevere and practice practice practice. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 and it's only this last weekend that I took the time to learn how to use the pentool. I must say thought that knowing how to use it productively is a revelation for me. You won't be fluent in PS from day one or even in five years time, but you'll soon learn to love it and your hands will be on the keyboard shortcuts like Liberace in no time. ![]() |

[/quoted] Hi, Nick. When you have to make quick change to a picture, do you "always" go to PS? or you use another quick software? [/quoted] I always use CS3 for editing. I started with Elements 2, which came with the camera and then upgraded to CS. For photography, I use a few tried and tested techniques and no photographer will really harness the power that PS offers. However, PS really comes into its own for the work we do on here. I agree with all Paul has said, so just keep following tutorials etc and you'll wonder how you ever did without PS. Nick |

Re: I feel kind of bad....
Paul & Nick: thank you so much for you encouraging words. I am going to try my best in that, as simple as the picture looks, to do it with PS intead w/ the other software, I will also work with the tutorials. Paul, I am glad that you understand that there are other photo-editing software out there that will do the same thing in less time (even though PS is MORE professional) and it is very tempting to go back for an easy fix. Thanks again guys |

Re: I feel kind of bad....
Hi there, if you're wanting to just make a quick change on an image (such as levels, contrast, etc)....you could always open the jpeg in Camera RAW from Bridge, or change the "File Handling" option for Camera Raw from the "Preferences" pane in Photoshop. It gives you the same 'quick edit' options as the Microsoft software, plus alot more... |

Re: I feel kind of bad....
I have a Microsoft product for image editing, and I have Serif Photoplus 11, and I have a product called Select Photo Studio, and I have Paint Shop Pro XI and Photoshop CS3. When I want to edit a picture I go straight to CS3 every time. I have found it to be by far the best of the entire bunch. It is (or has become) the most intuitive program of the lot and produces the best results by a mile. However, Select Photo Studio, which I bought for £10 from W H Smith a few years ago has a page curl function which is just superb, enabling me to add a curl to any corner, also allowing me to define the amount and angle of the curl just by dragging, also allowing me to add and edit a drop shadow of the page corner when curled, and allowing me to define the colour of the back of the "paper" when it is curled. Other packages, like Photoplus from Serif, and the Microsoft (Premium Photo Editor) allow different framing methods to be used, eg wooden frames, metallic frames, floral frames, slate and stone effect frames etc etc, so I would not want to be without them, but for editing, CS3 wins for me every time. I take pictures in RAW, edit in ACR, open into CS3, work on layered PSD documents, save in PSD format, then, if I want to use the image in another package, flatten and save as a TIFF file and open in another package. I think the ability to work with RAW files is one of the biggest factors for me when automatically clicking on the CS3 Icon. _________________ rob_stroud@yahoo.co.uk |

Re: I feel kind of bad....
Hi Rob: Thank you for your very much for your information. There are some softwares out there that can defenitely help in the framing and other interesting/fascinating photo effects. I am just starting with Photoshop, I do not have experience with RAW files yet, just got the book and trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks again for your input |
