Suggestion for CS5. Steve, please mention it to the Adobe people :)
A lot of my Photoshop work is getting images ready for print. Our RIP software likes images in TIF format. I get unpredictable results if the TIFF has layers in.

If I forget to flatten the image first I get a nice warning from Photoshop.

This is a great reminder that I forgot to flatten, but it only appears after I have navigated through the complex filing structure on network drives and after I have typed in a nice descriptive file name. All I can do now is click CANCEL, flatten it then go through the SAVE-AS again

Why can't it give the option to flatten like it does when changing modes from RGB to CMYK as below

It's not much but it would save me ages. IF this was the only update in CS5 it would be worth it.

When I save a TIFF I first get the option on the Save dialog of saving with layers, or as saving as a copy without layers. Then, when choosing the TIFF options on the following dialog, I again have the option of flattening the image.

Surely this isn't a Mac-only thing?

My wish would be a warning, when I try to save a PSD as a jpg. Typically I have been working on a file, flatten it and should do a Save As, but instead click save, and all my lovely layers are lost.
Of course if i was using my head, that wouldn't happen.

Thanks Steve.

The first option is no good because at that point I still forgot about layers.

I did notice the second option yesterday but for some reason I also thought it was too late at that point. I just tried it now and when I get the layers warning and I click cancel it still leaves me with the Tiff Options box open to then choose discard layers without having to go back and put in the name again.

Thanks.

@Vibeke. That is annoying isn't it. I even so CTRL-S (Save) instead of CTRL-Z for undo.

If you did not flatten it before saving as a jpg then I don't think you'd have the problem. The image is flattened for the JPG save but remains in memory as the layered image. (Or is this a new thing in PS. I seem to remember that it never used to be this easy)

Hi Vibeke,

Assuming that you haven't closed the file you can still undo the flattening and then re-save as a psd file with all your layers intact.

I know, but it's when I have closed the file and then notice... don't forget I am blond, or actually more grey these days.

Why do you flatten it in the first place? Photoshop can save a JPEG and flatten as it saves, without affecting the current file. You shouldn't need to do this step at all.

If I need to flatten layers for any reason I always use [CTRL]+[ALT]+[SHIFT]+[E] so that I merge all visbile layers to a seperate new layer retaining all the layers but having this flattened version sitting on top of the stack. That way if I need to do any global adjustments to that flattened layer I can without losing all the original layers.

Just a thought.

Vibeke you could even set up an Action which does all of this and even cuts that flattened layer into a new document.
