Linux calls me
Hello, Where are a geek family; that's the sad true, and my husband uses only Ubuntu, with a lot of code, three desktops, ect, ect And, (never forget : he's a real geek, with the coffe cup and the pizza!), he wants absolutly me to become like him.... I don't like windows (to much bugs), i can't have a Mac (to expansive!)... So, the logic wants me to choose an open distribution.... But (i always have a but!), my photoshop is not compatible... Arggggg.... And my experience with Gimp is horrible.... In french, on dit "oh, la sale bête!" My question is : Gimp = photoshop? Can i go, with my two closed eyes in the clear side of the Force? Someone here can help me?? Thank you very much! _________________ Mais je me connais, je lâcherais pas l'affaire.... Je vais piquer de grève comme on pique une colère... Véronique, First time I have heard of Ubuntu, your husband may be a geek, but you are an Artist, Don't change to something where you can't use Photoshop. I'm on PC because my friends who first taught me computers were. I'm now considering changing to Mac, but the cost + some of my other favourite programs is making me hesitate, But I will Never give up on Photoshop. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it demonstrated, but it was quite a few years before I could justify buying it. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Linux calls me
Vibeke, Thank you very much for your answer... I feel the same than you... I love so much my Photoshop, and i can't imagine a day without open it at less one time... Gimp is not my friend, and he'll never be.... I'm under the pressure, my husband and my son (9 years old, already a little geek, but with a cup of milk!^^) are really Linux addict... I think that my hard drive will be cut in two.... The Dark side, sold to the Big Capital, to Bill Gates and the Evil (citation du Maitre Jedi), BUT with my Photoshop chéri, and the Clear Side, paradize for the geeks, the freedom and the peace in the world! ^^ I hope my english is not too bad! Have a good day! Véro _________________ Mais je me connais, je lâcherais pas l'affaire.... Je vais piquer de grève comme on pique une colère... Plus têtue que tous les vieil homme et la mer... Re: Linux calls me
hey veronique, i think your husband is right by teasing you into the use of linux. do not fall for apple unless you found a way of printing your own money. use linux on an extra machine for web purposes and keep all your private data away from online connections. if you cannot do this crypt your partitions and or use extern harddrives for private data. you live in france after all and as far as i can tell you follow the news. _________________ Mein Freund, die Kunst ist alt und neu. Re: Linux calls me
Dual boot is the answer then surely? Use Linux for everything, then boot into Windows just for Photoshop. If the Windows installation has nothing on it but Photoshop then it's not going to keep crashing. |

Re: Linux calls me
Hi Veronique, Here is another idea. If you want to use two operating systems on one computer, you can also use a programme such as Sun Virtual Box. It allows you to run two OS's on one computer, side by side i.e. you can have a linux programme open in one window and a Windows based programme like Photoshop in the Windows OS in another window simultaneously. The programme I have mentioned is free to download and, not too difficult to use, I am told. The only thing you would need is a copy of Windows on a disk. Does this sound like an idea? Sophie |

Re: Linux calls me
Great suggestions analysis and comments from here IMHO Sorry the more boring part of my life for many, but ...... I used Unix (certified)/Linux few years ago. IMHO Very efficient kernal. A bit geeky , but can see and do anything with it (at your own risk). Linux continued to evolve. Powerful. Works well with Java too. We used Sun platforms, but if you thought Mac expensive........ !! Maybe getting drivers can be an issue for some devices When we used unix we could run applications like MS and other apps in emulation mode. ...... So I think Sophie has a good suggstion to follow, and maybe others. Have quite a few good friends/colleagues who a very good working knowledge of this. I can discuss further with them.... for latest if you want. We used Sun/Unix/Linux et al as the front line product (paid-for-products) I have been thinking going Linux for a few years, but have a business risk. Others above give good suggestions. I'd try on another machine first. |
