Macbook Retina 2012
So Apple has just released it's new Macbook pro and a Retina display version. Just wondering if anyone knows how this new display will benefit photoshop? The retina model will cost close to £3000 and is a thing of beauty, however it's design makes repairs virtually impossible. Alternatively the new non retina macbook has the same power and slightly cheaper, heavier but easy to repair. I am trying to justify the more expensive option but is it worth it for us designers?.. _________________ Quote of the day.. "Photoshop isn't really meant to be used for drawing".. |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
It may well be the best laptop on the planet, but it's grossly overpriced. When you're working in Photoshop, are you even aware of seeing individual pixels? In my experience with the iPhone and iPad, the retina display means that text is greatly improved, but frankly it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference when looking at images. But I wouldn't want to talk you out of it! |

But it's so shiny.. And apparently very quiet. Probably best to go for the non retina macbook and wait a couple of years until retina displays are the norm, if only I can convince myself of that! ![]() _________________ Quote of the day.. "Photoshop isn't really meant to be used for drawing".. |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
I agree that the Retina Macbook is a beautiful piece of engineering. The problem I have with it is, despite its super resolution, it's still a 15 inch display. For me that's not a big enough canvas to work on; I would still need a larger monitor for doing any serious work on. The 27 inch iMac, now there's a thing of beauty and it's cheaper than the Macbook! _________________ Leap and the net will appear |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
You could always plug the macbook into a bigger display. I need to portability of a laptop with the power of a desktop, and with minimal overheating, which seems to be the main reason for laptop slowdown. I am a bit worried about the graphics card in the macbook. I thought it was a good one but it seems there are a gew much better ones shipping in some pc laptops. Another question I have about the graphics card and photoshop/ after effects, 3d rendering etc.. Would it be better to go for a top of the range graphics card, or would the one in the macbook pro (1 gb geforce 650m) be sufficient with the 16gb Ram. I hear alot of people complaining that it wouldnt be good enough, but most of these people seem to view it from a gaming point of view, I would be purely using it for design work.. Any help would be great thanks! _________________ “Art Is Never Finished, Only Abandoned.” |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
Your question about the graphics card is an interesting one. When working on 3D rendering, especially, you'll be rendering four times as many pixels in order to get the same apparent size on the monitor... so does this mean four times the wait? Probably so. 1Gb is a lot of graphics power for a laptop but I'm wondering if the extra resolution isn't just going to cost a lot in terms of processing. |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
As far as I can tell, the 1Gb 650m is the only option available for the Retina Macbook; although it does have the integrated card, which deals with the lesser graphics operations such as text and flat display. As for the external screen, that's another £900, which is a little steep! _________________ If you hold on to the past, sooner or later you'll lose your grip. |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
I just checked out the geekbench results for the macs, it gives an overall score. http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks The imac and macbooks seem to be similar, both score very high. Obviously a top of the range Macpro come in at double the macbook but also double the price! Scoring 24000 The macbook retina and imac score about 12-13000, possibly higher with a RAM upgrade to 16GB Interestingly my current laptop scored below 3000!, significantly less that even a macbook air! Oh dear really time for an upgrade.. _________________ “Art Is Never Finished, Only Abandoned.” |

Impressive. I do have my reservations about benchmarks, though. They're a little like IQ tests, the results reflect a controlled environment; reality is often a very different picture! _________________ If you hold on to the past, sooner or later you'll lose your grip. |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
We had a long discussion on it in the Adobe Photoshop forum a while back, mostly focused on the problem of tiny tool icons on a 220DPI screen. We have been pushing for bigger tool icons even before the Retina display, because there is already a problem with the 2560x1440 displays (like Dell Ultrasharp,, and Apple Cinema screens) Up until now, Adobe development staff like Chris Cos, have said it is a massive job to resize all the icons, but they are now apparently working on it. We have no date, or even if this would have to wait for CS7, or be part of a CS6 update. Here you go. Just found this http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/06/adobe-photoshop-to-receive-retina-display-update-for-the-next-gen-macbook-pros/ _________________ Trevor Dennis www.flickr.com/photos/trevor-dennis/ |

Re: Macbook Retina 2012
I don't think there's any suggestion that the Photoshop icons would be tiny on a retina display. That would be crazy. As I understand it, all interface elements would remain the same apparent size. If developers want to update their software so they include double the number of pixels, and would therefore be sharper, then those would be used instead. |
