The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
What ho, chaps! It's that time of year again, and we're looking at dates for a Christmas meet-up. I was thinking about making it lunchtime rather than evening this year, to make it easier for those coming from a long way away, and probably the 2nd week in December. Can I have your collective thoughts on this? Thanks Steve |

Now that's a great idea Steve! I can get a connecting train back to Worcester instead of having to ask you if I could kip on your sofa for the night. Any date after the 14th is OK with me. ![]() |

I would love a lunchtime meet too! The second week in December is good for me - after that the 17th is booked but otherwise fairly clear _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
Lunch sounds a great idea. Travel certainly an issue late at night in London and I would have to impose on my friend for a transit bed at night again, though always accommodates me. I have a few events booked in December. But don't worry about me. Just to clarify, with "the second week", which dates does it span? (we have different definitions of "week" start-finish). Yes would like to go to California Joey! |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
OK everyone, we're looking at Wednesday 19th December, lunchtime, near London Bridge. Gordon and I are going down to check the place over tomorrow - that's today, if you're already reading this tomorrow - so do let me know by yesterday at the latest if you can't make that date. Pip pip! |

I'm in! 'Tis in the diary. Whilst on your culinary travels in the area try the restaurant at the George Inn, Borough High Street in Southwark. An old coaching inn built in 1676 and the last remaining galleried inn in London. I can't remember the cost but bags of atmos. Ted |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
Thanks, Ted - the George Inn was precisely the venue we had in mind. Gordon and I had lunch there today, and very good it was too: roast pork sandwiches came with stuffing and apple sauce and a selection of roast potatoes and a small jug of gravy. Excellent. The current building does indeed date from 1676, and Charles Dickens was a regular there (and William Shakespeare used to drink at the original medieval George Inn before it was rebuilt). It's a multi-room, sprawling galleried inn that's well worth exploring in its own right. It also has good wifi, so although the timing may be difficult it would be great if anyone from further afield was able to drop in via Skype. There's a set Christmas menu at a stupidly inflated price, but they will be continuing to serve much more reasonably-priced food from their regular menu in the bar, so this is the option we've gone for. The only problem is that we can't book a table in the bar, but have had a long chat with the manager who assures us that if some of us turn up at noon we'll be able to commandeer a set of tables large enough for all of us to sit down. With that in mind, Gordon and I (and anyone else who can volunteer to be an early bum on a seat) will be at the George from 12 o'clock, or slightly earlier, on Wednesday 19th December, with a view to everyone turning up some time between then and 1 o'clock. We'll be in the downstairs bar at the far end of the building. The George Inn is on Borough High Street, about fifty yards from London Bridge station (both overground and tube). It's through an arch on the left side of the street as you head south from London Bridge, and you can find a map of how to get there here. Since we can't reserve a table we don't need exact numbers, and there's no need to decide on food in advance, but it would be useful to know how many of you are likely to be able to come. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there! |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
Well I've resolved one potential conflict, as in not necessary now as we all meet before. I should be there, but have to look at trains (£). Its great having lunch time, off-peak and get home. I will get a "bum on seat" assuming trains on time from Birmingham International. Thanks for Gordonizing and Steve. I really hope many can attend with this schedule. I guess we can't get video conference link, but can give a international conference call? |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
Lunch at one looks like a real possibility for me. In order to get a reasonably-priced train ticket I need to book specific trains. What sort of time do you reckon on finishing? _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: The 2012 HotChiPs Christmas Party
Excellent! It will be good to get you there. As for finishing time... I'd have thought mid afternoon would be a convenient time for those who need to slip away, although there may well be a hard core who linger on into the evening. |
