Photoshop CS5 to CS6
Is there a substitute in cS5 for the Field Blur Filter in CS6? I don't have CS6, but there is a tutorial I wanted to follow online that uses this filter, (the tutorial is for CS6). So I was wondering if there is anything similar in CS5. Thank you. |

If you need to create the effects of the field blur filter in CS5 you would be looking at using feathered masks on separate duplicate layers to create targeted levels of blur and sharpness. |

Well I'm not sure this the best solution, but in earlier versions of PS you can achieve many result that later versions give you, but need to work a bit harder. I have CS5 as well. My thoughts you need to create a mask. I'd use pen to select the main area you want, but just me. Change to selection, then either change to smart object or just commit with clipping layer Gaussian blur, and more distortion and use the mask to apply to the areas you want. Ether way the mask is not really destructive and you can really mess around with that mask, paint into it (white) or out of it (black), but brushes and modes important then, or just enjoy it! ![]() Just a thought ......... |

Thank you both. It's not real important, so I'm not sure if it is worth it. I'll probably try to find a different tutorial! Jota, why do you recommend Smart Objects when using filters? |

Connie, the big advantage in my view is if you convert to Smart Object, you can apply filter(s), (not all work/compatible with SO) and afterwards, since nondestructive, can come back later and readjust/tune the filter. I think its great feature. You can also have several filters active on a Smart Object and delete them as you wish. You can also copy filter to other layers SOs as you wish. Well those are my thoughts. Trevor PS and totally agree with Maiden..... for which can still use SOs. SOs work in CS6 of course and I'm sure The Cloud version. |
