Custom Design Ring ... Help ...
Hi everybody, Happy New Year … I was wondering if you could help me with your artistic ideas and advices regarding a project that I have been working with. For my Father’s 80th birthday, I am planning to give him a custom design ring! I am designing the ring myself ;-) I will give my 3D drawings to a Jewelry shop in the US where they will make the ring. The ring will have my father’s initials (i.e. letter “D”, cause his name is also Daniel!) in gold over a white 12mmx12mm stone: 1) I have been looking for a font that is classic and stylish but not feminine! I have now narrowed down my choices to a font called “French Script MT”. One of my criteria has been to have the letter D look upright (i.e. not metallic looking). I think this way it looks more masculine! Do you have any other proposals about the font? 2) I would like the letter D to have some volume and appears as a 3D object (i.e. not as a 2D object cut from a flat plate). Using the Layer Style (Bevel, Emboss etc.), can you show me how you would have transferred the 2D letter D into an interesting 3D object, using either the French Script MT font or any other font that you would recommend? For the French Script MT font, I had to select a size of 42pt to place the D in a 12mmx12mm area. For both aesthetic and practical reasons (i.e. minimum dimensions of the mold) I also increased the thickness of the lines using a “Outline” thickness of 1pt (instead of the hairline or 0pt default Outline). I think similar thing has to be done with any other font ... I am really excited to receive your comments and ideas. Thanks a lot … Daniel |

Hi Daniel, And a Happy New year to you. Sounds like a great present. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the letter(s) looking upright or that they should have some volume, do you mean they are going to be raised from the stone rather than flush with its surface? Maybe you could post your 'rough' image to show us what you mean. |

Hi Deborah, And thanks a lot for your reply. I am so sorry for the confusing explanation. By upright I mean that the letters have a 90 degrees orientation, like the first and the second Ds in the figure (as opposed to the third and the forth ones which are slightly angled/deviated). As you describe, the letter D will be raised from the stone. By volume, I mean that different points on the surface of the letter will have different heights measured from the surface of the stone (as opposed to a letter cut from a flat plate which also will have volume, but all points on the letter will have a constant height). If this is still not clear, I will try to illustrate it somehow. Please let me know... Thanks again Deborah Daniel ![]() |

So what you are looking for is a good looking Bevel to an Embossed letter "D"? |

Hi Becky, Yes! Exactly … The “D” can be one from a standard font (French Script as an example) or one designed from scratch … |

I've played around in Photoshop. Not sure in what direction you want to go with this but this is what I've come up with. ![]() |

Thanks a lot Becky. This looks very good. I am just wondering; what about raising the D a little bit more?! With a 9mm D, we might need more emboss and bevel! What do you think? ![]() |

Hi Daniel, This is a bit rough, just using Dodge and Burn, but what about if the wider parts of the letter were more raised and curved than the thinner parts? ![]() |

Hi Deborah, This is a very nice D. Thanks a lot. I really like your idea of having the wider parts more raised and curved. It gives the D a unique character. |
