A could of newbie questions on forum use.
I have been experiencing difficulty compressing my challenge images using "Save for Web" without suffering undesirable quality in some case where fine detail is important. I notice some members seem to post quite large high res images. Would I be right in assuming that these are hosted elsewhere and a live link posted here. If so what is the syntax for this?

Secondly how do you get the quotes from previous posts to show when answering. Once again is there a syntax for this?

Sorry to bore with such mundane questions but I don't want to make a mess of Steve's forums with, possibly abortive, blind trials.

I will answer the second question as I too would like to know how people are posting such detailed images on the forum.

There are two ways you can go about getting a quote to show up in your posts. The first is simply to click on "reply" under the member's name in their post and the forum will automatically include everything that person posted in your reply. Note in the example above that before the actual quote starts the word "quote" appears between square brackets [] with no spaces. Just below this will be a lowercase "b" also encased by [] followed by the quotee's screen name, no spaces and then ending with a "/b" also between[] no spaces. following this is a return and then the actual quote. After another return is /quoted encased in []

You can then edit out whatever you don't want to show up in your post, just be sure not to edit out the final /quoted between the [], as this is the bit of code that allows for the quote to appear in that nice box. The b between the [] with the user name followed by /b between the [] makes the name appear in bold.

Alternatively you can just copy and paste whatever quote you want to include in your post and encase it in the quote between the [] and /quote between the[], which is more useful on very long posts like Steve's critique's of the Challenges, and how I quoted you. Just be sure to include the final /quoted between the [].

OK I get the quote bit. Thanks.

However the images link is less clear. The link seems to point to a file uploaded elsewhere on Steve's forum. That is still using up his space.

However since the quote is standard forum syntax I think you have pointed the way to me for posting live links to images hosted outside.

I will check it out in a little while.

Thanks Sara

Hi David,

If it works let me know, because I'd like to use it as well.

OK if this works you should see a photo of me hard at work shooting a movie in Las Vegas.......

Click it and you will see it is a quite high res image at the maximum JPG resolution.

DavidVegas by david.macd, on Flickr

If you hit 'reply' you will see the syntax for this photo which is on flickr.

I am new to flickr but I have discovered that to share photos like this the photo must be public and you must have allowed sharing in your profile. The syntax for this share seems to be very flickr specific ...... but it does seems to work. You find it by clicking the 'Share' button in flickr and selecting 'BBC code'.

I suspect other photo sharing sites may have their own syntax. Finding this was not easy. As far as I could tell flickr's own help files were completely useless. I found this syntax by trawling other frustrated user's posts in their forum.

Wish I could be more explicit but I am still somewhat groping in the dark myself. However here we have a 1.5 GB photo displayed with no overhead to Steve beyond this text.

At least I sincerely hope so ...............

Hi David,

Thanks for figuring this out. I'm sure others are going to use it too. Maybe someone else has more experience with Flickr and will provide more information for us.

Oh, and I 'm sorry you had to spend time in Las Vegas. The place makes me nauseated.

Well I had no choice i was there to work. Three visits in all amounting to two months.

Forget all those old movies with George Raft in a white tuxedo with a champagne flute in his hand. Modern vegas is Disneyland with any last remaining shred of taste or sense removed and peopled by visitors in baby pink and canary yellow nylon with a litre cardboard cup of cola in one hand and a litre cardboard cup of popcorn in the other.

First few days I walked around with my jaw permanently dropped at the sheer outrageousness of all the kitsch and pizzaz ....... but a diet of pure syrup soon palls and I couldn't wait to leave. A town created by commerce, for commerce, with neither soul nor community. How sad.

My hotel room had a huge bouquet of plastic flowers beside which was a little card assuring me that the management were proud to inform me that the scent was refreshed daily!

If that's pride then something is badly wrong ...........

Re: A could of newbie questions on forum use.
I only went to Las Vegas because my late partner's son lived there from 1994-2002. I am an American and I know we Americans are viewed as being vulgar rubes who are devoid of good taste, but I hated going to visit there. It seemed to me the entire town was high, and all those lights and artificial sweeteners were covering up a huge layer of despair. I heard that during the real estate bubble Las Vegas had a housing boom, but I cannot fathom why anyone would want to live there. When Jeff's son moved back to Rhode Island I couldn't have been happier because it meant I wouldn't have to visit that Gomorrah ever again.

I'm also not keen on Disneyland/world, but at least those places are geared towards children.

Have to say that (although I have never been there) from what I see, Vegas is as close to hell on earth as you can get without involving physical torture.

Still different strokes for different folks I guess

This conversation is getting way, way off-topic and I'm sure we'll be asked to move it if it continues for much longer.

It was hell on earth for me because it was mental torture, which I think is worse that physical torture. However, if my talent were gambling, maybe I would have viewed the place differently. Hundreds of thousands of people go there and they aren't all American citizens. I have found that most people live very superficial lives. I'm one who needs depth. I have often thought I would fit in better, if I didn't need to think so much.

I visited Las Vegas once. "Hell on earth" is a very apt description. Rarely have I been so disappointed in humanity.

Do keep in mind the Las Vegas strip was founded by organized crime figures, and as a group they aren't particularly known for their love of high culture.

What could possibly have made you go to such a wretched place as Las Vegas? Please tell me this wasn't your only experience of being in America.

Ha ha no, I went with my wife Carol (girlfriend as she was then) way back in 1980. We were on a six-week tour of the country, and took in LV just out of interest. Stayed one night, and couldn't wait to get out.

We'd just been to LA, which was weird, because there's no city centre. But afterwards we drove to San Francisco, where I've been back to since, and which remains my favourite city in the US. Perhaps because it's the most European?

Totally agree about San Francisco. Mama's on Washington Square does some of the best breakfasts in the country - but be prepared for a long queue! Last time I was there we had to wait over an hour for a table and I got a parking ticket on Christmas Eve because I was facing the wrong way!! When I paid the fine I wished all in the parking department a Merry Christmas but I think the irony was lost on them.

Nearest I ever got to Las Vegas was exactly 37,000 feet from the flight deck of a Delta Airlines Tristar and that was still too close for comfort!

In my opinion L.A. is just plain weird, that's why I live in this part of California. While I don't live in San Francisco proper, I am less an hour away by Caltrains. I couldn't afford to live there. I couldn't afford to live in Sunnyvale either except for the fact that I rented this apartment back in 1999.

Of all the cities I have lived in or near San Francisco is my favorite. It's just the right size. NYC was nice too, but it could get a little overwhelming at times.

Gordon,

Just after the .com bubble burst in 2000 my mother came out to visit. We went to Mama's and while it wasn't empty, we did get seated right away. That's the only time I've had that happen.

I haven't seen my mother since then so it's a really big deal for me to be coming back east for her and my aunt's birthday July 12th. I have a feeling they might be springing a surprise on me as well since my birthday is July 22 and it's going to be my first one alone since Jeff died.

DMV isn't known for it's sense of irony or humor for that matter. In 2009 Jeff and I spent Christmas Eve day in Marin. When crossed over the Golden Gate Bridge, we wished to toll taker a Merry Christmas when we paid the toll He gave us a Bah Humbug look. About a month later I received a summons in the mail to appear in court for not paying the toll. Fortunately, I still had the receipt.

Agree with you all about San Fran. What a wonderful city! I think Steve is right about europeans liking it because it is familiar in some respects.

LA is of course famous for its "seven suburbs in search of a city" layout. A very good LA friend of mind once told me 'you don't have to be mad to live here ... but it certainly helps'.

Im simply amazed that you were able to find to receipt after a month Sara!! The moment a receipt touches my hand it seems to disappear into an abyss somewhere in a parallel universe and never to be found again. Anything of importance I will always give to my sister or daughter for safe keeping.
I didnt mind Las Vegas. Only spent a night and day there after travelling through Death Valley. I was quite overwhelmed by it all..the lights, the casinos. It was certainly an experience. But give me the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley anyday!!!!

You can thank my car for that. It seems to like to collect receipts, used paper napkins and half full plastic bottles of water.

I'm with you on the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. With Las Vegas once you get over the overwhelmed feeling the nausea sets in. You were lucky to get out in time.
