Match Painting???
Hi again Steve.... I'm hoping you can help me. I don't see this info but maybe it's here in the book? How can I add a person or something modern to a painting and have the "added" part match the rest of painting..texture, grain, color...ect? Is this in the book anywhere or something to at least give me a clue on how to do this correctly? Thank you. |

Re: Match Painting???
Matching paintings is tricky, but can be done. First, you need to get the colors to approximate to those in the painting. If it's an old oil painting, then you'll be looking at a largely blue and brown palette - which means knocking the saturation right down so your new element doesn't look too bright. Also, use Replace Color or (if you've got CS) the Color Replacement Brush to town down any bright greens or yellows - these will look seriously out of place. Matching the texture means finding a patch of texture elsewhere in the painting, preferably from an area with little detail such as the sky. make a selection from this into a new layer, change its mode to Hard Light and desaturate, and place it on top of (and grouped with) your new elements. This is pretty much the same as the Matching Picture Grain technique in the book - page 96. Good luck with it! Steve |

This is an example, I did it for a contest, Justin Timberlake immortalised (perish the thought). Not perfect but it gives an idea. ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Yes - QuickMask really is the best way of making selections. Did I mention there's an expanded QuickMask section in the second edition? (Sorry, my publisher likes me to get a plug in whenever I can...) |

I'll second that Shelbie. Most of the other ones I have ( without mentioning names ) show you how to create spheres and other usless stuff that I just can't seem to find uses for. I prefer real, practical tutorials! - Infact the "Cheat" book has swayed me MORE toward illustration. I just find it so much more interesting! ![]() |

Re: Match Painting???
To be fair to the 'others', they are good in their own right. Books like The Photoshop Bible are invaluable if you want to know everything there is to know about PS. As Steve points out in the first book, there are a lot of professionals who never have and probably never will use all its features, mainly because it's not applicable to their field. Cheat attracted me because it specifically covers the type of thing I do with PS but if I were a photographer, it wouldn't really be much help. I tend to buy monthly magazines for photographic tutorials because it's not my prime interest and I can pick and choose, rather than spending a fortune on a book that covers the whole subject. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Match Painting???
I tend to agree ( in principle ) that most of the books are ok in their own right. However, going back to a couple of books I have bought, including a recent one ( again without mentioning the author ) who’s first book, I thought was the best thing since sliced bread, only to be pretty much annoyed that a lot of the tutorials in the book were free on his website ( or other similar websites ). I then decided to purchase a tutorial cd from the same author, again, the same tutorials that were on the cd were found in the first book ( which I had already bought ) and the various websites. I know this particular author is good at what he does, but having bought two books and a cd with mostly the same material in all three - to be honest, I was left feeling a little ripped off! I just get the feeling that some Photoshop authors do not like to reveal too much of what they really know. I just don’t get that sense with Steve’s book. I feel I have learned more from it than all others put together ! Paul. |

Re: Match Painting???
I can totally relate Paul! I've purchased a few books that gave tutorials you could find free on thier websites or posted BY THEM on various other websites I've been to and felt completely taken advantage of for being the "idiot" to actually pay for thier book. I feel if they are going to charge people for a book then they should at least keep most of the material from it strictly for the that book or explain in other books they just revise that it is a revision or remake or give discounts to owners of the 1st book if it is very similiar. I have found too many autors putting "paid" material out freely to the internet so now I research a bit before buying anything. With Steve's book tho, I can honestly say I haven't found as good information free anywhere on the web & I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase of it. |
