Freelance websites
Has anyone had experience of these? My wife found 'Elance' last night.

Basically, it appears to be Ebay for people skills. You have to subscribe ($120 per quarter) but it seems like it could be a good way of breaking into the circuit.

Well, I've had a look and it seems to be a legitimate proposition. How you'd actually promote yourself over the hundreds of other freelancers remains to be seen, however - do you pay a premium to get your details listed first?

What I'm not sure of is what kind of clients would make use of this site. Any established magazine, newspaper or whatever would already have suitable contacts, or would go on word of mouth recommendations from friends or colleagues. Maybe I'm just being too cynical, but I don't see reputable clients browsing a website in this way to find a Photoshop artist. And $120 a quarter is find if you get the work out of it, and expensive otherwise.

On the other hand, I could be wrong! It may well be worth a punt to find out if it works.

I do see your point about PS projects but as you've said before, you have to start somewhere and if I can get some small newsletter illustration job, it's something else to put in my portfolio. I had the same problem trying to get into the IT industry, I'd been using computers for years on a personal level but it doesn't tend to cut much ice with the corporate machine. Once I had my first break, it was a lot easier.

I doubt if I'll use Elance as you can't see anything unless you subscribe. I did find another through the forums on Worth, Creativemoonlighter, they have varying levels of membership, including a (rather limited) free sign-up, which allows you to create a profile and view all open projects but you have to be quick, once more than 10 people apply for the project, you can only view them.

I'm also be looking for basic web-design and writing projects, the web based jobs could make use of my PS skills, which I could use to my advantage.

I'm just going to sit back and see what transpires, I'm not losing anything by doing so.

David,

Haven't you thought of designing your own website and putting your own work on it and advertising it that way ?

This way you could advertise your site in your local newspapers etc !?

Paul.

I am going to get around to it but it's a case of mechanic's car, cobbler's shoes, etc., I've been doing so much on top of my day job, I haven't had a chance

Nearly all of my PS work is on my Smugmug gallery but I think a web-site with selected images of different themes would be a good idea.
