Layer Mask Smudge
In several of the examples in the book the smudge tool is used to paint in the mask. The worman on page 30 is a good example where we are trying to paint some of the grass in.

Anyone got a good sugestion on brush and settings for this when using the smudge tool. I tried a non-regular 14pt brush at 70% and was disapointed with the results.

It really does depend a lot on the image you are working on, eg. size of image and what you are attempting to paint in. Personally, for grass or other fine textures, I will use a small, medium spread, 3-6 point brush at around 60-70% flow, I find it allows more control over how it ends up (it's labourious but worth it), large brushes tend to make it look too 'patterny'. Larger brushes work well with images with uniform surfaces, such as sand and sea.

I also use the smudged hair technique a lot, with this, I vary between solid and scatter brushes, depending on the subject.

Hope this helps.

Scatter brushes work best for me - those are the ones that look like a pile of dust. I set the strength to 70-80% but then I do use a pressure-sensitive pen on a graphics tablet, which makes a huge difference.

Thanks Trinity & Steve for the replies. The examples in the book are very enjoyable, and some turn out quite good. I'm finding the brush very diffcult to control.

I've just ordered a nice 12x18 Wacom tablet intuos2 tablet so we see when that arrives if it helps.

As a final thought for Steve, I've bough more than a dozen photoshop books. This book is one of the better books with nice examples to follow though, but I'm especially impressed that you take the time to run a forumn and offer advice. It's not what you expect for a $35 book purchase. I be looking out for your other books next time I vist my local bookshop. I hope you bring out another Photoshop book soon.

Well, Andrew, I take Photoshop seriously. If people can be bothered to buy my book and then find their way here then the least I can do is to help them out with any difficulties.

Do, seriously, feel free to post any queries here and I'll do my best to answer them. If TrinityOfOne doesn't get in first, that is. (Who the hell is that guy? And why hasn't he written a Photoshop book yet???)

Enjoy your graphics tablet. Remember it will take you at least a couple of weeks to get used to it, so don't give up!

Sorry Steve, I don't mean to usurp you, it's probably just that I spend more time flicking to and fro', whilst you are busy creating digital masterpieces. To be fair, on this occasion, Andrew's question was directed at the general populace

I haven't written a book for two reasons, 1. I'm not that good and 2. You'd probably sue me for plagiarism

David (now cowering in a corner)

I blame my job, I'm an ICT analyst, so helping is in my nature. I have now gagged my fingers and will refrain from anything other than my own posts.

No, no! Don't stop! This is exactly what I hoped the forum would do!

Many thanks for your new Amazon.co.uk review, by the way - first one of the new edition. Much appreciated, as are all your posts!

Oh, no problem. Credit where it's due! I didn't realise the review had gone up yet. I was going to include a link to the website but Amazon's rules seem a little vague when it comes to doing that.

Honestly though, most of my techniques are either from your book or various sites that I have gleaned information from. Saying that, I have written a tutorial, which is in the tutorials section on Worth1000.com. My claim to fame
