Many Thanks Steve...
After sitting in your captivating session at Adobe Live last week, I ordered your book as soon as I got home. Since its arrival I have been hooked. Being a media student I have used Photoshop for image manipulation etc for a few years, but I never knew how much fun it could be. I now have aspirations of focusing my photographic work into the montage sector, you really have inspired me.
My family unfortunatly do not share my enthusiam since the books arrival. No matter how many times I show them the eye altering and facial expression changes, they still have the vain hope that one day soon I may drag myself away from this PC and take notice of the real world again!

Tabitha,

Well, thanks! I'm really glad you came along to the show, and particularly pleased you felt inspired enough to go out and get the book - the more people realise that Photoshop really is fun, the better.

There was so much more I wanted to demo at the Adobe Live show, but there just wasn't enough time... I'd hoped to go into the expression-altering thing with Liquify, but there was just too much to cram in.

Families always have trouble with Photoshop! My mum didn't understand what it was all about until she joined the local parish council and I did a montage of her with Margaret Thatcher (her taste, not mine). Now she sees the point of it!

Its a small world... bizarly I am currently trying to track down a photograph of Margaret Thatcher as I type. Unfortunatly having no joy as it has to be Hi-Res for a poster at college.
Any suggestions as to sites with Hi-Res downloads of celebrities, at a price that fits into a student lifestyle? Otherwise its trawling through the library and using a good old scanner!

As for Adobe Live.... I think they should have made your session alot longer, I am sure that you had more influence on people purchasing Adobe products than any other speaker, I just about managed to stay awake during some of the sessions.

Re: Many Thanks Steve...
It's tricky finding pics of celebs, let alone politicians. There seems to be a huge number here:

http://www.margaretthatcher.org

but there are no previews and for some stupid reason all the images are in PDF format, so you have to download each one before you can see what it is.

What do you intend to do with the poster? Is it just for use around the college, or for publication? If the former, you could get away with using any image you found on the internet or elsewhere. If you're having real trouble tracking a picture down it might be worth sending your email address to someone you know who does political montages and might have an old photo knocking around.

I keep meaning to ask, do you end up doing a lot of montages for for friends and family, my mother is great at telling people "David fixes PCs, he'll do it for you". I wouldn't mind but I'm usually the last to know about it

David,

I don't end up doing a lot of montages for friends because they've asked me - but every time a significant birthday rolls around, a large montage is kind of expected...

The one thing I do get is people asking me to fix their computers. I work at home, and my firm rule is never to look at computers at weekends. So when we go to friends for lunch on Sunday and they ask if I can just sort out a couple of problems - yes, that really hurts, it spoils my weekend if I have to look at a screen.

And Tabitha, remember I have a range of Thatchers clogging up my hard disk...

Many Thanks (again) for the offer Steve, of "a Thatcher".

I assume that you have seen my montage on the Image Doctor Forum. I have the image in my head of good old Maggie resting on the right foreground corner (a little like The Thinker), looking rather bored and with an edge of contemp. There seem to be many head and shoulder shots of her with this expression, but they seem to come out grainy when copied into my psd. Any way I can resolve this? Is this because the pics were taken with standard 35mm cameras?

I cant believe I have become so obsessed with Maggie Thatcher, is there no hope for me now?

I'm a bit of a computa-holic, so being in front of a screen doesn't really phase me, I suppose it's because I fix them for a living. Now, if someone turned round and said "David does montages...."

News photos of this kind are always grainy, and it's purely a sympton of the prevailing technology. News photographers use a high ISO rated film, 400 up to 1600, so they can capture quick movement without blur: they need to be able to grab a shot as it happens, as there's no time for staging and lighting an opportunistic image. The trade-off of fast capture is image grain, but that doesn't matter when photos are reproduced on newsprint.

The only real solution is to match the picture grain to the rest of the image - and you'll find the workthrough in the book. As for your obsession with Thatcher, I strongly recommend counselling while it's in the early stages

For some odd reason, I can't stop hearing that in Maggie's voice.

Tabitha - you have a lot to answer for!

I can only apologise from the very bottom of my heart. The thought that I have invoked anyone to hear Maggie Thatchers voice, deeply destresses me.

Maybe you should join me in the councellors queue?

That's OK, it passed almost as quickly as it came
