Stock images
I bought a copy of the Focus Photoshop guide today, this month's issue is all about colour and has a rather nifty looking program (ColourImpact) which gives balanced variants of colours, useful for web/graphic design, there are also some nice hi-res stock images. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Stock images
Update: I went to the website these images were taken from - http://www.absolutvision.com - they offer an 'all you can eat' subscribtion for $99/year or $25/month. The images are in 3 formats, hires (jpeg2000 with alpha clipping path), hires (standard jpeg) and lowres jpeg. The images are categorised and good quality by the looks of it. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Stock images
On the HtCiPS CD theres a program called Hemera Photo Objects with 100 free images, but from what I gather its a similar story you have to subscribe to get more, cant remember how much it is. Seems to be good if youre making a living from illustrations, but Im not sure as a hobbyist I'd want to spend out a monthly subscription fee for them, its cheaper just to do an image search, or take the pic myself. ![]() |

Re: Stock images
I have to agree Russ. However, if you intend to sell any of your image manipulations then you have to be careful of copyright infringements, but I certainly wouldn't be able to afford a monthly subscription for stock images. I tend to collect as many freebies as I can get from magazine etc. or as you say if you can't find it try photographing it yourself. |

Re: Stock images
Yes, I agree you have to be careful, but its quite a hard market to break into so the prospect of me selling any of my images is very slim. At one point I sent off my portfolio to a great deal of magazine/newspaper art editors, and I only got one reply and that was from The Big Issue. They said they only have time to look at 3 portfolios a week, and they already have a number of people on their books. I imagine what I am doing is no different to what those people are already doing, plus these people are very busy. Steve introduced me to an art editor but he thought I was trying to copy Steve and didnt have much time for me. I think he must get so many people hassling him all the time so I dont blame him. At the end of the day I really enjoy illustrating, but I dont see my images ever being published. For me its a bit like someone who enjoys painting in their spare time. Having said that, if I was a pro these programs look like a very convienient way to get hold of quality images fast, especially if youre working to a tight deadline (like 45 minutes!!). |

Hemera do the full photo objects CDs (I have one set) but as Steve says, they are all low-res (in printing terms). Ablestock is Hemera's online stock photography site, they are a little pricey though. I take a lot of images myself but it's difficult to get some things, especially people. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Stock images
People are always difficult to photograph - the right person, the right setting, the right look or expression. Only with a team of models and a studio could you hope to get exactly what you wanted but even then looking through Stock Images can be very frustrating when you want a certain look or action or more especially the right angle to your shot. So I would agree with you in that respect. |

I'd resent anyone implying that I was trying to copy someone's style. Steve's books offer ideas and techniques and I have used a lot of them in my images but I wouldn't say they are copying his style. It's like someone telling me I drive like my instructor. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Stock images
I know a few good resources for stock images, try these links below if your ever looking for images in your work. http://www.imageafter.com/index.php http://www.freeimages.co.uk/ http://www.mayang.com/textures/ http://www.sxc.hu/ http://www.bigfoto.com/ I`ve also got the hemera collection but find that the imagesx ar too small. They work perfect for web projects. I als subscribe to a few imaging mags which sometimes offer free images on the cover CDs. Ryan |
