Image Storage & filing
I have recently started getting into photography and combining this with my interest in montages means I have started photographing props and backgrounds etc. I am rapidly filling my hardrive and its becoming increasingly difficult to find an image when I want it.

I wondered if anyone could offer advice on a suitable software package (Santa is due soon) that they have used. Alternatively you may have a tried and trusted method that works well. Any advice would be appreciated !

Thanks

I use Picasa, it's completely free as it's now owned by Google. It scans your drive(s) for images, or you can tell it which folders to use. Indexes and allows you to give your images keywords, similar to how stock libraries work.

Depends on whether you're using Mac or PC, really. I use Extensis Portfolio, which is excellent, but the current version is a little quirky in some areas. iView Media Pro is also good, and very similar, but I haven't used it as much so can't really comment.

What Portfolio does is to catalogue your images. You can tell it to watch a particular folder, or set of folders, and the images will be added each time the folders are updated. You can assign keywords to imges, and that's the real power of it: of course, the searching is only as good as the care you took when assigning keywords, and that can be a tedious process. But it does have drag and drop for keywords, which speeds things up: select a bunch of images, and drag a keyword from the list onto any one of them and it will be applied to all of them.

Photoshop's File Browser, of course, is vastly improved in CS, and also works with keywords. I use a combination of the two: Portfolio for searching (mainly) images of people from my various web and CD collections, and the File Browser for picking an image from a folder full of stuff that I've mainly captured myself.

But I'm sure I'm not the only one with an opinion on this...

I am on a PC Steve. I think I will give Extensis Portfolio a whirl. I am sure they provide a demo. Several other people have mentioned this product to me as a good all round option.

David, I downloaded Picaso after you posted a comment about it on this forum several months ago. I have not played about with it too much but my initial impression is that its not good for looking for images in different catergories. Lets say if I did a search on a pet, would it bring up all images that I had saved against that Keyword ?

Thanks chaps.

Yes, it does show you images by category/keyword. The main problem I have is that I already have an extensive library but neither the time or inclination to go through them all and add keywords

That's nothing I don't have any days off from Thursday 23rd to Dec 31st. And then it's only the weekend followed by another 3 days of work.

Don't worry I intend to have a nice Christmas, and helping others at Christmas is as nice a way to spend the holiday period as anything else. I'm sure it will have it's perks
