Dads Stuff?
Steve just been looking back over past threads and was amazed to see you had written a book "Dads Stuff". Exactly how many books have you written? and across what subjects? Dads stuff looks quite fun and got great reviews on Amazon and from a Dr no less. Even though I'm not a dad I met have a look at that, might be able to impress my childish mates! ![]() |

Aha! Well spotted! Well, I've written a few books - including Icon Design, The Complete Guide to Digital Illustration, and Max Pixel's Adventures in Adobe Photoshop Elements 3. Dad Stuff is the first book that isn't about computers, which means my friends no longer have to feign interest in it. It's quite a new direction for me, but one that's a lot of fun - and I hope it will be the first of many! |

How much easier is it to write a book after you have written the first? |

Re: Dads Stuff?
It doesn't really get any easier - but you do get better at it! Up until the time I wrote Icon Design, I'd spent the previous ten years doing illustrations, working on projects that took half a day. To switch to something that takes several months is a big change! It's largely a question of organising your time to fit in with your working methods: one of the main reasons I wrote Cheat in double page spreads, for example, was so I'd be able to write a spread in between illustration jobs. Writing books is real fun: I've enjoyed every single minute of How to Cheat (well, OK, apart from doing the index, which is just a pain) and it's been great to have had the opportunity to write the same book three times, making it better and clearer each time. I will keep Cheat going for each new version of Photoshop, of course - it's something I do take seriously, and I have no intention of dropping it! But my plans for How to Cheat in Illustrator may have to take a back seat for the time being, while I work on the successor(s) to Dad Stuff. Also, Dad Stuff is being released in the US in May, under the title Be the Coolest Dad on the Block (not my idea). Watch this space... |

What a naff title !! Im really disappointed you've shelved HTCII - I think theres a huge, untapped market out there. I know you indicated in the past that, traditionally, Illustrator books dont sell so well - hardly surprising, most are rotten ! Unlike the oversaturated Photoshop market, where there are dozens of competing titles for even niche areas - such as Camera RAW - Illustrator has no such problem, you have the basic titles that tediously cover the tools, menus etc, but no 'cool' books that cover fun stuff ! _________________ |
